Schools bring hundreds of people into shared spaces every day, creating plenty of opportunities for germs to move from surfaces to hands. While families cannot control every exposure, knowing where high-touch areas are located can help children build better habits at school and avoid bringing as many germs home.

High-Touch Surfaces Deserve Attention
Door handles, stair railings, light switches, faucet handles, and shared computer equipment are touched repeatedly throughout the day. Desks and tables also receive frequent contact, especially when several classes use the same room.
Cleaning these surfaces regularly matters, but cleaning alone cannot prevent illness. Handwashing remains important because respiratory and stomach viruses can spread through close contact, contaminated hands, droplets, and other routes.
Shared Supplies Create More Contact
Classrooms often contain pencils, scissors, tablets, art supplies, sports equipment, and other items used by multiple students. Younger children may also be more likely to touch their faces after handling shared objects.
Schools may use custodial staff or a commercial cleaning company to maintain classrooms and common areas, but students still benefit from simple habits. Washing hands before eating and after using the restroom is particularly important. Children should also avoid sharing water bottles, eating utensils, and other personal items.
Cafeterias Need Special Attention
Lunchrooms combine food, crowded tables, shared seating, and frequent turnover. Students should wash or sanitize their hands before eating and keep food on clean surfaces whenever possible.
Germs are part of any busy school environment, so the goal is reasonable prevention rather than trying to eliminate every microorganism. Consistent handwashing, proper cleaning, responsible handling of shared items, and staying home when sick can reduce opportunities for infections to spread through classrooms and back into households.
