Moving into a new home can be very exciting! But with so much to think about in a move, it’s easy to let some things slip through the cracks. As a moving specialist, I’ve been helping people relocate for years, and I can tell you that there are a few things most homeowners won’t remember right up until the last minute. The big tasks like packing boxes, renting a truck, and changing your address usually get plenty of attention, but the smaller details are the ones that often create the biggest headaches once moving day arrives.

Remember Your Utilities
One of the most common issues people will usually forget about is transferring utilities early enough. Many homeowners remember electricity and water, but overlook internet service, trash pickup, gas, or even security systems. If you wait too long to schedule these services, you could end up spending your first few nights in the house without Wi-Fi, hot water, or air conditioning, and nobody wants those kinds of first impressions in their new home!
Measure the Furniture
One thing I’ve often seen people forget is measuring furniture in advance before moving day comes along. I have seen couches that would not fit through the front door, refrigerators that were too large for the kitchen opening, and oversized sectionals that could not make it around a stairwell. Before you move, it is worth taking a few minutes to measure large pieces of furniture, doorways, hallways, and tight corners. Without measuring in advance you’ll likely bang up some of your furniture or God forbid your new doors and walls.
Don’t Forget Your Essentials
Many homeowners also forget to pack an essentials box. After a long day of moving, the last thing you want to do is dig through twenty boxes just to find a phone charger, toilet paper, or a clean shirt. I always recommend packing a box or bag with items you know you will need during the first 24 hours. Include things like toiletries, medications, important documents, chargers, snacks, paper towels, and a few basic kitchen items. Having those essentials within reach makes the first night much easier.
Mailing Address Changes
Changing mailing addresses after moving is a task people often put off. Plenty of people will remember to update their address with the post office, but forget about banks, insurance providers, subscriptions, credit cards, and online shopping accounts. Missing an important piece of mail or having packages delivered to your old house can create unnecessary stress. I’ve learned that it helps to make a simple checklist of all the places that need your updated address before the move.
Cleaning
Cleaning is another issue that catches many people off guard. Most people expect to clean the home they are leaving, but forget that the new home may need attention too. Even if the previous owner cleaned before leaving, it is always easier to deep clean floors, cabinets, appliances, and bathrooms before furniture and boxes fill the rooms. A clean start can make the house feel more comfortable right away.
Don’t Forget Your Furry Friends
Pets can also make moving day more complicated than expected. With movers carrying heavy furniture and doors constantly opening and closing, it is easy for pets to become stressed and hard to handle. I usually recommend having a family member, babysitter, or friend watch them during the busiest part of the move. It helps keep everyone safer and allows you to focus on getting settled in.
Finally, many people underestimate how long the entire process takes. Packing almost always takes longer than expected, and unpacking can stretch on for weeks if you are not organized. Hiring a professional moving service can make a huge difference because it allows you to focus on the transition itself rather than the heavy lifting and logistics.
