Hello World! Welcome Friends! If there’s one thing we’ve noticed over the last few generations, it’s that there’s a marked increase in not just the number of women who are entering trades, but women who are becoming complete and our successes when they do. It was long thought that trade jobs such as builders, electricians and plumbers were reserved for men, that The Dirty work should be done by men and therefore the trades are often dominated by men.
However, we are seeing a change for future generations of women in trades. It’s important to see representation in the industry. Companies who have a focus on diversity and inclusion are also looking at ways to encourage women into trades, which means that there are more likely to hire women at the moment than they are men. There are still some women out there who hesitate before determining whether or not a trade would be a right career path for them, and here are some of the reasons that you should absolutely go for it if you’d feel good about trades as a career.
1. There is Far Less of a Gender Imbalance
Men are still dominating most of the traditional trades, but a woman can be a plumber as much as a man can be. In fact, a female plumber is often trusted in a way that men aren’t by other women. That’s not a sexist thing, but some women who live alone, for example, would prefer a female tradie to come into their home than a male tradie. There is less of a gender imbalance now across different sectors, which include the plumbing industry and the electrical industry. This is because of a proliferation of training programs that really do address the gender gaps in trades. These training programs focus on the basics of plumbing and electrical work that young women have been less likely to learn during high school.
2. There Is a Market for It
It doesn’t matter what your gender is: everybody needs more plumbers and everybody needs more electricians. If you are a woman who is looking to swap careers and wants to get into a trade because you love working with your hands, there is a market for you out there. You are very likely to get a job, so why not give it a try?
3. Female Plumbers and Tradies Will Often Succeed
The most important reason to go for it and go into trades is because women entering trades are more likely to succeed. The fact that it comes with a bigger income than you’d expect is also an important factor because you’ll be able to climb the ladder a lot faster. Given that women are a minority in the trade sectors, you are likely to be able to brush up against companies who are looking to improve their diversity and inclusion, so are more likely to give you a go.
It will always be daunting to change careers, but if you want to get into trades, there is a market for you and there is space for you to learn.
