Since 1969, the slogan “Virginia is for lovers” has endured, making its way from bumper stickers and license plates to billboards and t-shirts. While the phrase initially referred to the state’s many natural aspects, such as its beaches and historical sites, the abundance of vineyards has made Virginia a wine lover’s paradise, too.
As more and more people recognize the advantages of living in the “Old Dominion,” smaller towns are gaining popularity. Homes near vineyards are in demand, and real estate agents in Centreville, VA, and similar cities stay busy!
But what is it that brings so many wine lovers to Virginia? Here, we’ll explain why the state’s award-winning wine country rivals that of the more exotic vineyards around the world.

A Rich History
As the Mother of States, Virginia’s reputation of patriotism and loyalty dates back to the 17th century, and its winemaking history has been around almost the whole time. The original settlers in Jamestown understood the need for agriculture through crops for survival. Once the immediate needs were met, the Virginia Company mandated that colonists plant vines as early as 1619.
Although it took many attempts to adapt the vineyards to the changing climate, native flora and fauna, and pests, the state persevered. Advocates like Thomas Jefferson encouraged Virginians to keep producing wine. Jefferson established one of the most famous vineyards in history at his home, Monticello. The vineyard didn’t make it to commercial levels, but it boosted morale and helped others learn the ropes. Today, Virginia boasts over 300 well-regarded vineyards.
Overcoming Obstacles
While some climates are naturally ideal for winemaking, Virginia’s climate had some drawbacks. The freezing temperatures and other conditions made it challenging to keep familiar grape varieties alive through harvesting. It wasn’t until the 1800s, when Dr. Daniel Norton created a hybrid grape that could withstand the changing temperatures and weather, that Virginia’s vineyards began to flourish.
Now known as the All-American hybrid grape, the Norton grape changed winemaking history. But before it could really get off the ground, another obstacle arrived: Prohibition. Beginning in the early 20th century, this period of American history stopped the production of alcohol across the country, except in areas where “bootlegging” was illegally practiced.
But by the 1950s, with Prohibition firmly in the rearview mirror, wineries began to expand using the Norton grape and various European blends. The 1970s brought famous winemakers Gianna Zonin and Gabriele Rausse to the state, establishing the Barboursville Vineyards. Rausse was given the title “the father of modern Virginia wine,” and his knowledge was shared throughout the state.
Wine Regions of Today
Modern Virginia’s wine regions take advantage of the diversity in the state’s landscape to explore different types of grapes. This unique geographical mix means that vineyards are known to produce wine with specific characteristics. From the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains to the Shenandoah Valley, there’s a wine for everyone. Cabernets, Chardonnays, and Viogniers abound, and the vineyards continue to grow. Today’s owners have evolved their practices to include sustainable winemaking methods, boosting the popularity of these vineyards as both local favorites and tourist attractions.
