Hello World! Welcome Friends! It’s not uncommon for those who lived as stay-at-home parents to feel a little worried as they return back to the working world. Maybe their children have grown up now, and their CV has an eighteen-year gap lacking any kind of professional experience. But does that mean you don’t have professional skills? Far from it?
After all, raising a brand new human from scratch is arguably more difficult and requires more organization than any Teams meeting, or putting together a deadline for your work. Returning to the workforce, then, while a new environment you have to get used to, shouldn’t feel entirely disconnected from who you are and what you can do.
To help defeat this sense of personal concern and feeling of insufficiency, we hope to provide you with some of the most pressing advice. Without further ado, please consider some of the following advice, to ensure you move into your new life chapter with the confidence and care you deserve.
You’re Great at Multi-Tasking
As a stay-at-home parent, multitasking isn’t just a nice skill, it’s a daily norm. Balancing household chores, childcare, and other responsibilities (like staying on good terms with your partner) requires great organizational skills and the ability to prioritize what actually matters. Any employer would benefit from your skills in that regard, where managing multiple tasks simultaneously is often necessary too. So, don’t assume that the rigors of a workplace are going to be too much for you, or that spinning more than one plate will be out of your capability – you’ve been doing it already.
You Think Through Problems Carefully
Problem-solving is a fundamental aspect of parenting, be that trying to keep your temper after they’ve drawn all over the walls to resolving a dispute at their school. It might just be that you’ve caused two siblings to stop fighting with one another, or you’ve helped a child overcome worries and confidence issues. Put it simply, parenting can feel as academic as it is experiential – there wouldn’t so many books written about it all, otherwise. This analytical mindset is a valuable bonus in the workplace, where complex issues often arise. You’re coming in with a pair of fresh eyes, for example you might immediately see that a lack of commercial railings in a new building is a fall hazard. Your ability to assess situations critically, consider different perspectives, and bring up practical solutions will prove invaluable as you navigate professional challenges. So don’t doubt yourself!
You Handle Stress Like a Pro
If there are two skills a parent learns, it’s how to function with limited sleep and plenty of stress. That’s not every day of course, but certainly a core part of learning to be a parent. Navigating the school run with a boisterous child and limited time is tough, but you might do that daily. These self-management skills are helpful in the workplace, where deadlines, pressure, and demanding circumstances are commonplace. At the very least, you’ll be able to identify when a boss is asking too much, and you’ll have the confidence to say “no.” You may be very surprised just how helpful this can be over time.
With this advice, you’re certain to return back to the workforce knowing that despite a lack of recent experience, you absolutely deserve to be there.
