Hello World! Welcome Friends! Whether you’re in the construction industry, or you’re involved in some kind of construction-based experience, the chances are you’ve heard of asbestos, as well as hearing about how dangerous it is.
However, this has become common knowledge over the last decade, or so, there are many people out there you know it’s dangerous but is not really sure why. What does it do, and why are people so afraid when they hear they may have come into contact with it?
Today, we’re going to tie up all the loose ends and teach you everything you need to know on the dangers of asbestos, and why you need to be aware of it.
What is Asbestos?
Contrary to popular belief, asbestos is a naturally forming material made from minerals. However, the substance is relatively fluffy by texture, and due to its natural properties, it made an excellent insulation material, especially throughout the 1990s.
Construction companies around the world adopted this material, and due to how easy it was to get a hold of, it was very profitable to businesses who used it; thus, many companies did, and ultimately a lot of buildings were using it.
This was then accompanied by the fact that other materials, such as concrete, plastic, and even paper, could be mixed with asbestos to make it stronger, and therefore, a better, more effective material.
There are multiple different types of asbestos available, available in different strands, although many are similar and have the same effects, side effects, and uses. By US law, there are six many types legally recognized.
Why is Asbestos Considered So Dangerous?
In its natural or even solid state, asbestos isn’t dangerous. However, it’s the tiny, invisible fibers of the substances that are. These fibers can travel easily through the air, and cannot be smelled, touched, or tasted. This means they can be easily inhaled without an individual even realizing they are doing so.
What’s more, the dangerous side effects of asbestos insulation take between 40 and 50 years to come, so even if you haven’t had regular contact with the material in over 30 years, you can still be harmed by it.
This is why it’s so important to make sure you’re steering clear of buildings and areas that have been contaminated with asbestos. If you do find some in a building that you live or work in, you need a professional service to remove it. You can find out more about this here.
So, What Does Asbestos Do?
The most common problem that asbestos creates from a healthcare standpoint is build up in the lungs. These fibers can accumulate and block airways and parts of the lung responsible for carrying and transmitting air around the body. This causes the person suffering from a condition to find it very difficult to breathe, and over time, this can be fatal.
Some of the related conditions that form from asbestos inhalation include; asbestosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pleuritis — all of these need to be professionally treated if any signs of them are shown.
Summary
As you can see, asbestos can be hazardous, and it’s vital that you’re mindful of the dangers, so you know to stay away from it. If you suspect you’ve come in contact with it, always seek immediate medical assistance.
