Hello World! Welcome Friends! We all know that housing work is essential, but it can feel like the millstone around our necks. We can wake up and look at a poor-quality ceiling and worry about leaning against a wall too much in case we damage something, but so many of us put off major housing work for a number of reasons. Let’s show you some of the major reasons, but also what we can do about it.
A Lack of Urgency
If a home is generally in good condition and the issues are not urgent, homeowners might feel that they can put off this work for a while. However, a lot of what makes a problem seem not urgent can sometimes be where the danger lies. For example, during the summer, we can avoid making changes to something like the siding to prevent water damage, but as soon as the rain picks up during the fall months, we can instantly regret not learning about siding installation and making the appropriate changes. We can often prioritize smaller cosmetic updates rather than the large structural things, but the main problem is that when we wait for a problem to become more pressing before we tackle it, it can be costlier and cause more damage in the meantime. Therefore, being diligent and looking for things that are minor issues now but could be big ones in the future is the best approach.
Financial Issues
Let’s make no bones about it, upgrading a home is very expensive. At the moment, many people are concerned about the cost of living, and with inflation high and household budgets tight, the expense of these large home projects can be daunting, and therefore, lots of us may choose to postpone this work until our financial situation improves. The problem is if budget is the main reason and these housing issues are slowly starting to snowball, it’s worth looking at getting more equity out of our home or finding lines of credit that are affordable in the short term.
Concerns About Contractors
We’ve heard so many horror stories about builders who’ve done a terrible job or those notorious cowboy builders. Contractors can wipe us of so much money instantly that it’s easy to be of the “once bitten, twice shy” mindset. Additionally, sometimes we need to delay a project when a builder has just started, and if you need to do this, it’s always worth communicating openly with your contractor about your timeline and your budget, and therefore, they may be able to suggest ways to either phase the work or reduce costs. If we maintain a good relationship, it may be easier to pick the project back up later on.
Lack of Time
People are seldom ready for it because of the ongoing juggling that is work, childcare, and other commitments. Postponing allows them to tackle it when their schedule is less hectic. However, there are a number of solutions available, of course, such as getting contractors but also being far better with your time management because this can then help you to understand what is truly important.
The bottom line is simple: we should never put off major housing work because we can pay the price in so many different ways.
