Hello World! Welcome Friends! When people find any leakage in their home or office or they have broken taps, the very first thing they remember is to call a plumber. Then what makes them look down on a plumber or other trade jobs like plumbing?
Though some people respect all the work that earns a livelihood, many still look down on jobs other than white color jobs. They think plumbers do all the drain cleaning and are not very educated.
But they don’t understand plumbing requires more skills in the field rather than a degree or certificate to prove ourselves. So, as plumbers, we often wonder and look for reasons that are wrong with us or disrespect us.
Why Are Plumbers Looked Down On?
Don’t Value Plumbers
People often never realize plumber’s importance as they don’t need us in daily activities. As already said, not everyone looks down on plumbers.
How can we expect any respect for our work from people who have never needed us in their lives? Simply put, when people understand the value of a plumber in emergencies, they will not see it as unimportant.
Before looking down, ask people who have called a plumber because of leakage, emergency plumbing problems, or at least seen a plumber working. These people will let you know how important we are to the general people.
Another reason is that plumbing is not the most attractive profession since it often entails dealing with blocked drains or toilets and trash.
Overconfidence of White-Collar Job Holders
It is one of the biggest reasons most people look down on plumbers. Some white-collar job holders think that they can do anything or any work on their own. They believe having a white-collar job means they have all the knowledge to do any work.
They often think that jobs like plumbing are not as important as those for the public. But when they fail or make some blunder out of their over-smartness, they remember the trade workers like plumbers, and electricians, to solve their issues.
Now again, it is their perspective toward plumbers. People like them do not make our plumbing work unworthy. At some point, they need our help because they cannot do all the work alone.
We plumb because we can protect people in ways they do not understand and do not appreciate. This is our burden and our superpower. We can do the job; our customers cannot!
People are Imparted With Such Thinking
Not disrespecting any occupation and people based on it is usually taught at a young age. But most schools and universities across the globe teach or, better say, manipulate students to grab a white-collar job with high pay or make much money with some business.
Children are taught that they can be successful if they pursue engineering or MBBS. So, jobs like plumber, foremanship, and other trade jobs have never got the dream job title. That’s where people start disrespecting or looking down on plumbers.
Eventually, most people develop a view or think there is nothing wrong in disrespecting these occupations even though they need us.
In reality, being a plumber requires us to always be creative and problem-solving. We deal with various systems, and every system has a unique collection of components and devices.
Stigma About Their Education
In the modern world, people are respected based on their educational degrees and background. Their skills and art of doing any work are often overlooked.
Moreover, people who never went to renowned schools or colleges are looked down on even though they earn a livelihood with skilled-based jobs. People believe that plumbers or other trade workers are uneducated, so they should not be respected.
Being a plumber is an excellent job because we have pricing power with an enormous skill set. We can also make six-figure earnings and other benefits like other jobs.
We do plumbing because we can, not because we are not capable of doing other jobs. Additionally, being a plumber or electrician or doing other trade work does not mean we are uneducated.
According to one Warrnambool plumber: “I went to an apprenticeship school to be a union plumber for 5 years and learned more valuable things there than I did with any formal education I ever received. I learned how to draw isometrically, solder, braze, weld, complex maths offsets for piping in the field (22.5, 45, 60 degree offsets), medical gas codes and installation requirements (yes, plumbers install all medical gas piping in hospitals), plumbing code, and even foremanship and dealing with different personalities.”
Job Stability and Security
People often misunderstand plumbing as unstable and insecure, which drives them to look down on this occupation. While the truth is that people’s need for plumbers is quite similar to the need for doctors- everyone and everywhere people need our help.
We are the often-overlooked domestic heroes who restore sanity and avert crisis. The demand for plumbers is strong now and will be the same in the future.
Besides, the job of plumbing offers us a certain level of job security because an excellent and skilled plumber can always find employment, and the job can’t be outsourced. Also, a great thing about the plumbing field is that it is a career anyone can choose at any age.
Plumbers do save lives. Without sound plumbing systems to deliver clean water and get rid of wastewater, people would all be at risk of catching potentially fatal diseases. Keeping the plumbing systems in all homes and cities in good working order is a worthy task that protects our nation’s health.
Respect Means Money and Social Status
One of the biggest reasons we are overlooked as plumbers is because one can only get respect if he has good money and social status. Some people compare and look down on our occupation because of their high level and earnings.
They have a superiority complex because they are well educated, do a respectful job, and earn a lot. Society always looked down on jobs like plumbing. It is still not understood why a person is looked down on based on occupation and earnings.
It is a misconception that plumbers even significantly less. We make quite enough money to make our life beautiful and earn livelihood for our family. Besides, we are great entrepreneurs, as many plumbers own plumbing businesses or companies.
Plumbers Overcharge for Their Work
We have discussed that people have problems with low-income plumbing jobs, and that’s why they often look down on us as plumbers. But when their turn comes to pay money, they think plumbers charge high for a bit of work and don’t want to spend much.
They don’t understand that not everyone can be a highly-skilled plumber. People try to fix extensive problems themselves due to thinking plumbers overcharge for even small work. The situation worsens, and then they realize they need us, the professional plumbers, to fix things.
Hypocritic Social Judgments
Schools do not teach or provide enough information about trades. A plumber by occupation does not get enough respect and is often looked down on by society. But when a plumber says he owns a plumbing company, he is seen as a business owner instead of a plumber.
And society’s attitude will drastically shift toward their profession and work.
It is the mere hypocrisy of a society that does not define us as plumbers or plumbing business owners. Society’s thinking changes with fancy job titles.
Owning a plumbing business or being a plumber is something people can never understand till they understand that no job is small, no matter which.
Plumbing Is Not a Profession
Most people in society see our plumbing job as a commodity that they can access easily. People do not understand that plumbing or any other trade occupation are professions that require special skills. Trade jobs can be exceptional alternatives to lawyers, doctors, professors, or other jobs.
The bottom line is that people indeed do not understand our work, but they need our services as much as they need a doctor, engineer, professor, etc. People don’t even know that trade jobs offer perfect money and require only highly skilled peers.
Moreover, these people who don’t consider plumbing as professional have no clue that the daily water supply at their homes is because plumbers dedicatedly do their jobs.
Lastly, we can only say that plumbing and the other trades are good, honest jobs that involve creativity and skills in people working in these fields. Not to forget our dedication to our work that drives us to people within a call despite knowing we are looked down on by them.
