Hello World! Welcome Friends! Do you walk into stores and get the first perfume that matches your personality and smells great enough to turn a few heads? Well, you’re not alone. A lot of people don’t bother to decipher between strong ‘masculine’ or sweet ‘feminine’ fragrances. So, the ‘For Men’ or ‘For Women’ isn’t something many pay attention to.
The reason is simple; the way people use perfume has evolved. Initially, people used perfume to mask body odor or natural smells. That’s why it’s understandable that many still don’t know what’s the difference between male and female perfumes. Should it matter? Keep reading for more information on the composition of different fragrances, you might find it helpful to check out what is cologne made of on Cupids.

1. A Little Background Information
Perfume may seem like a modern term, but it actually dates as far back as ancient times. What is new, however, is the distinction between male and female perfumes. Back in the day, fragrance was extracted from wood, roots, flowers, and mosses for two main reasons, to mask odors and prevent diseases.
The scents were used by both men and women alike. However, as years turned to decades and decades to centuries, perfume became a luxury item used to exemplify personality, mood, social status, wealth, and luxury.
2. Packaging and Marketing
This may be a marketing strategy, but it’s so easy to identify a perfume made for a specific gender. It all boils down to a term coined by some as gender by design. Marketers package products with designs/colors they think will appeal to a particular sex.
For example, packaging floral scents in a bottle that looks like a sexy stiletto will certainly appeal to a specific gender… women. Then, we find that brands advertise ‘For Her’ scents with less woody or oriental scents and more floral or citrus notes. However, a ‘For Him’ bottle would contain notes leading towards oriental or woody, or leather notes.
3. Cultural Appropriation
Some people argue that scents are unisex. In essence, this means there is no particular smell that’s either male or female. Woody notes could appeal to a wide range of women while florals could equally be a top pick for men. However, we find that many people in India, Maghreb or the Middle East don’t fall into these cultural lines.
You’ll find men ordering a Chloe bottle on sites like parfumdreams.ie regardless of the male or female section. For them, it’s all about finding a perfume that makes the smell as wonderful as they perceive themselves.
4. Biology Versus Social Influences
Could biology play a part in why ladies lean towards more subtle yet aromatic scents rather than strong, woody, or earthy fragrances? Or are we simply trying to meet societal standards? Well, the truth is, marketing strategies are mostly based on data and reviews. When scientists or brands take polls, ask for feedback, or study human behavior, it’s easier to take advantage of the results. It’s safe to say that the whole gender difference when it comes to scents has really dug deep simply because of market research.
However, let’s take some time to consider this, it’s possible men walk into a store and naturally navigate towards dark-colored packages with a woody or oriental notes because of learned behavior, the same goes for women. For example, many celebrities rave about how good Rihanna smells, some say she smells like success and dreams come true!
How many ladies wouldn’t break their backs to purchase that same scent or at least one with the same notes? Not many, and guess what? The notes are fruity, sensual, and what many would describe as feminine.
It’s not compulsory to fall behind the male or female lines when it comes to perfume. Simply go with your instincts and wear what makes you feel confident, bold, happy, but most especially, what makes you feel like you.
