Crystal-clear pool water may look safe, but microscopic threats can still be present even in a well-maintained swimming area. From gastrointestinal illnesses to skin infections, contaminated water can be a breeding ground for microbes that pose health risks to swimmers of all ages.

One of the most common bacterial threats in pool water is Escherichia coli, which can lead to serious digestive issues if ingested. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is another culprit, often associated with ear infections and rashes, especially in heated pools and spas. Viruses like norovirus and adenovirus are particularly stubborn. They can survive in water for days and spread quickly through even brief contact. These pathogens are often introduced by swimmers themselves and are highly resistant to typical disinfection efforts if water chemistry is off balance.
Fungi such as Candida species thrive in moist environments and can cause athlete’s foot or other skin irritations if swimmers walk barefoot around pool decks or share equipment. These organisms are opportunistic and flourish where water treatment falls short.
To reduce the risk, pool owners must commit to consistent water testing and appropriate sanitation methods. Using high-quality commercial pool chemicals helps maintain the right pH and disinfectant levels, creating an environment where harmful organisms struggle to survive.
A clean pool is about more than visual appeal. Invisible threats can compromise health, and prevention begins with informed care and regular chemical management. For more information, check out the infographic below.
