Hello World! Welcome Friends! DIY is something we all have a different skill level with. Some of us can pull off the biggest projects and barely break a sweat, and some of us can struggle to even open a paint can to get the walls in the living room done! And because of this, DIY projects sometimes go wrong, even if you’re sure you were doing exactly what was needed. But when you get into a situation like this, what do you need to do next? Well, here’s a quick checklist to go through to ensure your DIY problem doesn’t get any bigger!
Stop Immediately
The first thing you need to do right now is put your tools down and step away! You’ve made a bit of a mess, and there’s a good chance you’re feeling a bit frustrated and even angry with the failure in front of you. However, instead of trying to channel this feeling into something more productive, take a step back and don’t let it overwhelm you.
You need to take a break right now, but before you do, try to cordon off the area as best as possible, and make anyone else in the house is aware that they need to stay away from the DIY problem. This is especially important if you’ve got kids running around, and if someone could get hurt if they get curious!
Don’t Try a Temporary Fix
Now that you’ve taken some time to think about what went wrong, and you’ve taken a break to calm your frustration levels down, don’t just jump back into things. You need to step away immediately, instead of applying another poorly fitted and most likely temporary fix.
There are exceptions to this rule; if something is smoking, make sure it won’t cause a fire, and if something is leaking/dripping, don’t let it turn into a flood. But otherwise, leave the DIY problem be, even if you had a plan to fix things, and move onto the next step.
Get a Professional to Help
Now it’s time to reach out to someone who actually knows what they’re doing! Of course, it might be a bit pricey to call out a plumber to fix a leaky pipe you’ve accidentally made worse, but it’s the best way to ensure the problem is resolved and that you can use the toilet without worry.
A knowing eye can both tell you where you went wrong and give you advice on performing such a fix in the future, and don’t let yourself feel ashamed for getting help like this! They’re a professional for a reason, and you’ve clearly got a lot to learn, so find the right number and don’t be afraid to dip into your emergency savings if need be.
A DIY project can go wrong for a number of reasons, but don’t beat yourself up about them. Instead, follow the steps above and make sure your home is looking good and functioning well. Take a lesson away too!
