Hello World! Welcome Friends! It’s an awful feeling when you lose your keys and can’t get into your home, or when you’re in your home and lose them so you can’t go out because your house will be vulnerable to trespassers – both options are bad, and you might feel unsure about what to do next if this situation ever happens to you.
Although this is definitely the type of situation that can very quickly cause you to panic if you’re not careful, the good news is that there are ways you can fairly quickly get past the problem so it becomes nothing more than a memory (and perhaps a lesson to learn from in the future). With that in mind, keep reading to find out what to do if you lose your house keys so you can solve the problem quickly and without too much stress.
Stay Calm
The first – and most important (for now, at least) – step when it comes to dealing with lost house keys is to take a deep breath and stay calm. That might not be easy, especially if there’s somewhere you need to be, for example, or you’re worried about who might have your keys, but it’s important; you can’t properly assess the situation or make any decisions if you’re panicking.
Remember, most of the time your keys won’t have been stolen, just lost, so try not to think about intruders (especially because there are options on this list that really mean that’s not a particular issue anyway), and instead take a few moments to center yourself. Panicking won’t help you find your keys or get into your home, and consciously making the decision to stay calm will help massively.
Retrace Your Steps
As we’ve said, it’s highly likely you’ve left your keys somewhere or dropped them when you were out and about, so if you want to stand a chance of finding them, you’ll need to retrace your steps. When you do this, it’s not only about coming across your keys by chance; it’s about putting your mind into a place where it can remember what happened much more easily. It might be that just by going through your normal routine for leaving the house or walking back to wherever it was you’ve just been to, your brain is triggered into remembering exactly what happened, even if you weren’t initially consciously aware of it.
It’s also a good idea to check any pockets you don’t usually put your keys into, and if you’re indoors, check places like the fridge or washing machine. If you were distracted during your usual routine, you might have put the keys somewhere unusual without thinking, so it’s worth a look.
Search the Area
Hopefully retracing your steps will yield some useful results, but if it doesn’t you need to search around the area to see if you can find the keys. Depending on whether you’re inside the house or not, you’ll need to look under furniture, inside drawers, on the driveway, in the car, near entryways, and so on. Keys are only small and they can easily fall out of pockets without you realizing, especially if they land on something soft so you don’t hear them fall.
It can be a good idea to get some help to do this to ensure you’ve looked absolutely everywhere. It’s amazing what can happen when a friend or family member takes part in the search – you’ll often find they discover the keys in a place you thought you’d already looked. In fact, calling someone to help isn’t just going to be a good idea if you need some assistance searching; if you’ve got a friend or family member who has a spare key, that’s going to be massively helpful – at least you’ll be able to get in or out of your home, even if you don’t find the original keys right away (or ever).
Call a Locksmith
It’s at this point that it’s a good idea to call a qualified, experienced locksmith. If you’ve not come across your keys and no one you know has a spare set, a locksmith can open up your door for you, and they’ll be able to change the lock and give you new keys. That means not only can you get into your home, but it will be safe and secure because if anyone found your keys and wanted to use them to get into your home, they wouldn’t be able to – they wouldn’t fit anymore.
In fact, even if you do know someone who’s got spare keys, it’s still worthwhile changing your locks if you don’t find the original set. Although it’s highly unlikely that someone will find your lost keys, work out where you live, and then decide to use those keys to get into your home (although this is a good reason not to have your address listed on your keyring, as it’s a big security issue), what if someone deliberately stole them from you? In that case, their sole aim will more than likely be to do exactly that. That’s why you’ll want to find a good locksmith as soon as you realize you’re not getting your first set of keys back (when that point comes is down to you), just to keep yourself and your home protected.
Take Preventative Measures
As nasty as it might feel and as frustrating as the situation might be, you can use losing your keys as a wake-up call to look at your home security measures and see if anything needs to be improved. It’s highly likely you can do more to keep your home safe, and if losing your keys is the reason you’ve started looking into what to do, then at least that’s a positive you can take away from it all.
You can also use the experience to help you stay prepared for future emergencies so it doesn’t happen again (or at least becomes easier if it does). One great idea is to make a spare key kit that includes spare keys for your home, car, and any other important locks. Keep the kit in a safe place, or with a trusted friend, and you’ll always know there are options to help you in case something goes wrong.
