Hello World! Welcome Friends! Many cleaning jobs are straightforward when you break them down. Hoovering a floor, for example, is a simple task, as is dusting. But there are loads of cleaning jobs that are pretty difficult because they’re fiddly, complicated, or hard to do to a high standard.
Below, we’ll look at some of these to decide what is the hardest thing to clean in a house.
What is the Hardest Thing to Clean in a House?
1. Lampshades
Lampshades are usually pretty difficult to clean unless they’re glass. Fabric lampshades can be hard to clean because of their texture, and more specialist materials (paper, wood, etc.) all come with their own issues.
Generally, you won’t need special products to clean a lampshade. For a fabric shade, use a soft brush, such as a boot polishing brush, to knock dust off. Other materials can be dusted as normal, provided you take care not to damage them.
2. Toilet Seat Hinges
Toilet seat hinges are another hard thing to clean because they’ve got lots of small spaces where grime can build up. They can get really grubby, too, meaning they need to be cleaned regularly. While it’s not a complicated job, it can certainly be fiddly.
There are 2 ways to make the process easier. First, aim to buy a toilet seat that clips onto the hinges. They’re simple to take apart, giving you access to all the small gaps you need to clean. Most adjustable width toilet seats have some kind of button-based connection system.
Also, buy a foam cleaner of some kind. It gets into small spaces far better than a normal spray, meaning all you need to do is wipe it off with a cloth.
3. Oven Interiors
Let’s face it: many of us ignore the inside of our ovens because they’re so annoying to clean. The dried-on food and the small space make it a time-consuming and boring job. This is why oven interiors are on our list.
As for how to clean them, oven cleaner and elbow grease are your friends. The best tip for making the job easier is to just stay on top of it. Once you’ve got the oven to a decent standard, cleaning it every week or two will make it a quicker and easier job because food and grease won’t have long to bake on.
4. Textured Surfaces
This is quite a general one but can cover wallpaper, wall mouldings, soft furnishings, and more. Anything that doesn’t have a flat surface can be really hard to clean because you’re limited in what you can actually use. What’s more, textured surfaces can collect dust really quickly.
The best way to clean most textured surfaces is with a soft brush. Knock dust and debris onto the floor where it can be hoovered up. If you need to clean up marks, try to blot rather than wipe to avoid causing damage.
5. Gloss Tiles
Gloss tiles, and any high-shine surface for that matter, are hard to clean. This because it’s challenging to clean them to a high standard. Usually, you’ll leave behind streaks or smears.
Unfortunately it’s not really a job you can make easier. Clean the tiles as normal and then buff with a microfibre cloth. Bamboo cloths for cleaning glass are good for this because they don’t leave any marks behind.
6. Window Blinds
Whether you’ve got Venetian blinds or vertical blinds, keeping them clean is a right pain. Dust gets stuck to the slats and there are loads of fiddly bits that are difficult to reach with a duster. Vertical fabric blinds are often even worse because they flop around while you’re cleaning them!
For rigid blinds, the best tool is a blind slat cleaner. For soft blinds, your best bet will probably be to hoover them. As with oven cleaning, aim to do it regularly (once a week) to make the job easier overall.
7. Channel Drains
Channel drains in showers look sleek but they’re incredibly hard to clean. They often end up with water sitting in them, creating an ideal breeding ground for mould.
Aside from not having them installed, there isn’t much you can do to make this job easier. Just do it regularly and use drain cleaner to stop them from getting backed up.
Final Thoughts
So, what is the hardest thing to clean in a house? Out of this list, it probably has to be window blinds. Most other jobs have some kind of hack to make them easier, but blinds are often just a pain to clean! If you don’t happen to have time to do a deep cleaning or an end of tenancy cleaning, then it’s worth seeking out a cleaning service.
