Hello World! Welcome Friends! Whether you’re researching in order to be prepared, or actively need to figure out how to get rid of termites as soon as possible, look no further, for you’ve come to the right place. A termite infestation is among the most vicious attacks that a home can come under, with very rapid damage being done, if the owner doesn’t act swiftly.
In this article, we’ll look at how you might attempt to conduct your very own termite inspection at home, but also talk about seeking professional help.
First Things First, What Are You Looking For?
If you’re worried you might have termites, it’s a good idea to inspect the area before calling in pest removal experts. When inspecting the home for termites, you might look for:
- Wood damage – a clear sign of trouble is when your wood sounds hollow, if you knock on it. Termites can cause very rapid, very serious wood damage, so this is where you should begin your inspection. If the wood has a strange, rippling sound when you knock, take a screwdriver to inspect the inside of the wood. You will know termites have been at work if there are termite tunnels present (running in the opposite direction of the wood grain);
- Termite mud tubes – these are basically termite roads, made chiefly out of mud, that allow the pests to move through your home and your wooden structures at fast speeds;
- Droppings – also sometimes referred to as “frass”, termite droppings will look like tiny, oval pellets that are typically deposited along the woodboards, door frames, or sometimes along the windowsill;
- Piles of wings – this may come across as quite gross, but when the weather gets nice, it’s not just us humans who start thinking of a holiday. Termites will shed their wings, leaving them in great big heaps, as they leave in search of a nicer home;
- Actual, live termites — obviously the best indicator of a termite infestation is the presence of live termites.
Now, if you’ve found signs of at least a couple of these things, it would be a good time to call Precise Exterminating and Wildlife Removal. When it comes to termites, they are vicious houseguests, and insanely difficult to get rid of. Do not attempt to remove termites by yourself, as you will fail, and the time spent trying will result in even more damage to your home, and we’re pretty sure that’s not what you’re going for.
So call a pest control professional, and they will know how to best address the problem.
Where to Inspect?
If you’re unsure where to look for the above signs of a termite infestation, or just want a more clear idea of where the pest control experts will begin their inspection, read on. While termites can and will spread to the entirety of your home, they will most likely begin somewhere along the base of the house (which is terrible news for you, because once the foundation is compromised, so is the rest of the house).
Aside from the basement and foundation (as well as the attic, since that is also an area of the house that’s easy for them to access), here are a bunch of other places you’ll want to check:
- Firewood – this is the perfect home for termites, as it gives them easy access to wood to feast on. Are termites considered pests? Quite dangerous ones, which is why you want to keep any piles of firewood away from the house, and ideally off the ground.
- Fence – termites may hail from a neighbor or who knows where else, and on the way over to your house, they will stop to feast on your nice, wooden fence (though will eventually make their way back to your home).
- Deadwood – leaving fallen tree logs and branches around the yard is practically a sure-fire way to invite termites onto your property, and as with the fence above, once they attack other wooden structures on your property, it’s only a matter of time until they make their way into your home.
- Cracks and holes – last but not least, cracks in the structure and foundation of your home often provide the ideal entry point for termites. This is also where they may be found, crossing in and out of the house.
Remember, termites are serious business, so keep your eyes peeled. If you detect signs of a termite infestation, reach out to a qualified pest control professional, and they will know the necessary next steps.
