Hello World! Welcome Friends! There are many avenues to jump into the Real Estate Market. One of them is to be a landlord. Keep reading to find out What are my Legal Responsibilities as a Landlord?
Casual Property Letting
Many people believe that being a landlord is easy while having a definite passive income monthly. Being a landlord is not a piece of cake and with it, comes many responsibilities as well. Though you expect the tenants to pay rent each month, they also have some expectations from you. There are many landlord-tenant laws that were created to cover all the obligations, interactions, and rights of both the tenants and the landlords that ultimately promoted casual property letting. Though the laws sometimes vary according to the states their sole purpose is to provide both of them with rights. There are some duties and responsibilities that a landlord must fulfill. If you were surfing the internet for this then luckily you have landed on the right page. This article will guide you through the legal responsibilities of a landlord.
Maintain A Safe Environment
No tenant would like to stay in a place where the environment is spooky and not safe at all. A tenant would expect his place to be safe and as a landlord, it is your duty to make him feel like a safe environment. Being a landlord, you are obliged to make sure that all the doors are closed and locks are working. Besides this, you should also make sure that all the front doors should have a deadbolt lock. One should also respect the privacy of the tenant and make sure that no one has the key to the tenant’s apartment. You should make sure that the outdoor areas are properly lit and free from all hazards such as an unstable handrail or even a broken step.
Clean Environment
When paying rent for a place, the least one would expect would be it to be cleaned. Though you don’t have to wash their dishes nor pick up the clothes from the floor you do have some responsibilities to maintain. You should make sure that the trash is taken out, either by you personally or by some agreement with a tenant or superintendent. One should also make sure that the common areas are free from garbage and are mopped or vacuumed on a decided schedule. Sometimes a landlord is way too busy and if you are among those and can’t keep the environment clean then opt for casual property letting.
Respond To Repair Requests Promptly
When taking rent from your tenant, it is your responsibility not to only take money but to also resolve their problems as well as their repair requests. One should solve the request for repairs from the tenants in no time. One should realize that the more delayed a repair is, the more costly it would be. A cabinet door off of its hinges might not seem to be a big problem but it shall not be delayed for more than a week as the expense to the repair may be doubled or even more in some cases. If you can’t respond to the repair request yourself then hire casual property letting.
