Hello World! Welcome Friends! The rustic style of decor can come into your home in many ways. Whether you rent or own your place, you can incorporate the rustic charm into your home. You can take your rustic decor in many different directions, and they will all add a level of comfort and style to your space.
You should be cautious about doing all the possible options simultaneously because there is such a thing as rustic overload. Think about when you go to the store and see all the decor on one aisle. Each item is individually cute, but together they can overload the area.
If you have natural features in your home already, you are one step ahead of everyone to start. Do your best to preserve or refurbish these features to create a natural backdrop for your decor.
Here are a few ways you can add rustic charm to your home:
Artwork:
Adding artwork to your home is a simple way to get rustic charm without having to change out your furniture or make significant changes to the structure of your home. When choosing artwork, go for a simple design that incorporates natural elements. These should include natural wood, cool colors, or other natural elements.
Choose simple designs that don’t distract from the rest of your home. They should blend in with the rest of the pieces you choose.
Signs:
It is a popular choice to include signs in the artwork of your home but use these sparingly as they can be unnecessary and become clutter. In the kitchen, you don’t need three signs telling you that it’s the kitchen and it is where you should eat or drink coffee. They may look cute for the first few weeks, but the signs will be redundant quickly.
If you like the look of signs on the wall or the counter, choose a custom sign from an artist that has your family name or a memory of your vacation like vintage license plates. This will make the design feel personal to your home and not like clutter.
Woodwork:
You can go all out with your rustic charm by adding rustic wood features to your home, such as a reclaimed wood wall or beams across the ceiling in your living room. These are a more expensive method of creating a rustic style, but they will make long strides in adding character.
Open shelving with a raw edge is one of the easiest ways to incorporate woodwork into your design. They are easy to install and come in various designs and stains to fit your space best. Before taking the plunge, speak to a professional about what would work best in the space.
Natural Fabrics:
If you already have a plush couch, don’t rush out and replace it just to add a little rustic charm. You can start by adding throw pillows in a natural linen fabric or a chunky cable knit throw. Your space will be more comfortable with a touch of coziness.
For a little bit of country charm, add some plaid fabrics into the mix. Choose colors that complement the other materials in the room and highlight that country charm.
Knick-Knacks:
You can go full farmhouse with knick-knacks, or you can dial it back to a little rustic charm. Much of the farmhouse decor will include animals or other items repurposed into decor. Galvanized containers also have a prominent place in rustic farmhouse decor. Scale these back to a few pieces in select areas or choose items that don’t stand out for a subtle look.
Every surface in your house does not need a knick-knack or decoration. Give your eyes space to rest, or the room will begin to look cluttered. Your dining table does not always need to have a full set of candles and floral centerpieces, and your end tables don’t always need a book on them.
Plants:
Bringing in plants will add charm to your home, and the container you put them in will contribute to the rustic elements in your home. If you want a rustic vibe, choose a natural wood container, terra cotta, or you can make a macrame plant hanger to add depth to your decor.
Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can get artificial plants to bring green into the room. They add a lived-in charm feel while not adding to your daily tasks.
Kitchen:
The kitchen is a room in the house where you can add rustic decor while also adding to the function of your kitchen. A decorative set of canisters or measuring spoons can add charm to the room while contributing to its function. Simple pieces can go a long way to creating a farmhouse feel.
If you want to take it a step further, take a couple of cabinet doors off the hinges and create your own open shelving. This style is on trend and also gives your kitchen a mini makeover. If you aren’t able to take off the whole cabinet door, consider replacing the hardware with a more rustic style.
Own Your Design:
If you are interested in rustic charm, don’t let yourself be discouraged by negative comments. Your home is where you are supposed to feel comfortable and safe. And if that means creating a rustic farmhouse even if you live in the middle of New York City, do it.
That being said, don’t go overboard and create a space where you are stared at by animal prints from every angle and ignore all advice. Talk to a few friends and get their input on how to improve the space and add to it over time. There is no rule stating that it has to be redecorated in a single shopping trip.
There are so many styles within the rustic charm family that you don’t have to choose from just one. You can take some elements from the cozy ski chalet and combine them with the contemporary farmhouse. There is no wrong way to add charm to your space in your unique way.
