Hello World! Welcome Friends! A particularly nasty hurricane season has gotten a lot of people thinking about water damage. With thousands of people forced out of their homes, one can’t help but wonder how they would behave if their own personal sanctuary were compromised by water. Maybe there are no serious weather events tracking toward your neck of the woods, but water damage can happen at any time, to any home. Can you take care of it yourself?
DIY: Gift or a Curse?
There’s nothing wrong with having a healthy interest in the do-it-yourself movement. In many cases, it’s a great way to save a little money, and stay sharp by learning new skills.
It also lets us put a more personal stamp on our homes, and allows more room for customization. These days, DIY is also a huge opportunity for home improvement stores, who’ve profited from the massive influx of homeowners seeking the nuts and bolts for themselves. Even small businesses can find ways to cash in.
All in all, doing it ourselves gives us something to be proud of.
Now that we’ve covered the sunny side of DIY, we’ll go ahead and admit it – the internet has turned everyone into a handyman. When something breaks down in your home, it’s easy enough to type the problem into a search box, and watch a video tutorial on how to fix it.
The catch? For starters, many of the highest-rated, most-viewed video tutorials are hosted by – you guessed it – professionals who know very well what they’re up against. They’re giving you key insight, not recommending that you rush off and DIY it.
Furthermore, remember that much of the satisfaction that comes from DIY is the ability to put your own stamp and style on projects. Is the plumbing in your house just begging for your personal touch? No; there’s a method and practice to doing the job safely and getting great results.
Plumbing Repairs You Should Never Take Care of Yourself
When it comes to water, you need professional plumbers for your home or business. Here’s a sampling of some tasks you shouldn’t take on:
-
- Identifying and repairing leaks. Professional plumbers are much more efficient at locating the source of a leak, and accessing it without causing great damage to your home.
- Installing a dishwasher. With dishwashers, it’s so easy to slide that unit in without paying proper attention to the water line. If the water line is compromised somehow, you’ll have a leak.
- Unfreezing pipes. With a deep freeze comes the chance that you could burst a pipe or damage water lines. If you really want your water back, ask a plumber.
- Installing a water heater. This isn’t just a plumbing job; it converges with electricity or gas. Therefore, you have double the reason to call a professional.
The bottom line? Go ahead and paint that fence. Build that bench, and install that paver pathway. But when it comes to major tasks which affect your utilities, put your DIY aspirations to the side. When you get the job done right the first time, a professional plumber can save you money.
