Hello World! Welcome Friends! Growing your own vegetables can be a highly rewarding experience. That being said, it can also be daunting, and this is especially the case if you just have no idea where to start. While it’s good to go off what you eat, you also need to pay special attention to how easy a crop is to grow. If you want some help kickstarting your new gardening venture, then the only thing you have to do is take a look below.
Beetroot
Beetroot can be sown right into shallow drills in the soil. It can be ready to harvest within just a few weeks too. if you want a good seed to start with then Boltardy is a great option, and it is highly resistant to bolting. This makes it the best option if you are a beginner. One thing to know about this vegetable is that it is able to produce medium-sized roots and that it has deep red flesh. If your beetroot does not have these characteristics, then it may be that you need to apply some more compost to your soil to keep your vegetables healthy.
Salad Leaves
Salad leaves, such as rocket, and even oak-leaf lettuce can all be sown into pots. You can harvest them whenever you need them as well. This means that you don’t usually have to tend to the plants for very long at all. Remember, you can buy a lot of salad varieties online and you can sow them together if you want to create bright and vibrant meals. Salad leaves are very forgiving, and you would be surprised at how easy it is to maintain them, even if you have a busy schedule.
Bush Tomatoes
If you want to grow tomatoes, then make sure that you go for the Bush variety rather than the Cordon variety. The main reason for this is because they do not need support and you also don’t have to pick the side shoots either. Heirloom bush tomatoes can grow well in a hanging basket, or you can put them in a pot. They do well outdoors, or you can put them in a greenhouse for ease. If you want to delve into greenhouse gardening, then you can easily buy all of the equipment you need, online.
Potatoes
Potatoes are incredibly easy to grow. The only thing you have to do is put them in the ground or even in an old compost bag. Just be sure to cover the leaves with soil when you first see them appear. This is called “earthing up”. If you do this, then you will be able to harvest them a few weeks after. Early potatoes, or the ones that you plant around April can then be harvested in July. You just need to make sure that you pick them before the hot and humid weather hits, or you may be at risk of potato blight.
Peas
Peas are super easy. Simply make sure that you opt for a compact variety where possible. The main reason for this is because they do not require staking at all. They can be grown with ease in a container, and you can also trim the young tips if you want to use them in a salad. They make a very delicious spring treat, as are the pods and the flowers.
Radishes
The seeds for radish are quite big and this makes them easy to grow. You don’t need to thin them out either. They are ready for you to harvest in a couple of weeks, and this is great if you do not have a lot of time or patience for growing vegetables. The French Breakfast variety is ideal as it has a crisp taste, red and white roots and is forgiving if you are new to gardening.
Miner’s Lettuce
Miner’s lettuce is another option if you want to get started with gardening. It can give you a steady crop between October and March, with the taste being very similar to spinach. Make sure that you give this crop a go if you want something easy without opting for standard lettuce leaves.
Cayenne
You can grow your own chillis, or cayenne on a windowsill. You just need to ensure you have a warm and sunny position outside. The growing conditions are very similar to bush tomatoes, and you can continue to harvest the crop until winter. If you don’t have a lot of space to grow vegetables, then this is a fantastic option.
