WHAT PLANTS GROW BEST IN WHICH SHADED AREAS OF YOUR GARDEN?
Most people only place water or rock features in the shady areas, as these areas are the trickiest part to get plants to grow. With some guidance, you will be able to plant the right kind of trees and plants in this area. The different kind of shady areas in your garden or landscape include:
In the Shaded Areas:
Shade-loving groundcovers are perhaps the best plant life to cover the ground of the shaded areas. You could also select plants with contrasting leaf colors, shapes and textures. Plants like woodland cyclamen, Persian shield or Japanese painted ferns would thrive in shaded areas and create beautiful looking spaces.
Under the Bigger trees on your Property:
When the plants have to survive under the big trees, the plants must be able to survive the root competition. The biggest challenge is competing with the bigger tree for water and nutrients. Apart from that, the smaller plant also needs to survive dry soil under mature trees. You could go for plants like oyster plant, aspidistra as well as shade-loving bromeliads.
The Passage on the Sides:
There are long and narrow passages on the sides of all houses and apartments, sometimes in between two houses. These areas are usually blasted by midday sunlight, but other than that are always under dense shade. You could always add some kind of texture with different kinds of plants, to grab the attention of visitors and neighbors. Plants like camellia japonica shrubs or cane-stemmed begonias, are perfect for such spots.

Shady South of the Garden:
This area is perhaps one of the areas that receive the least amount of sunlight and remain shaded most parts of the day. This kind of area is perfect for the fern glade. Pants that could thrive in such an area includes bird’s nest ferns, stag and elkhorn ferns, soft-barked tree ferns as well as painted Japanese ferns. If you have some features like a fallen log, you could beautify it with native violets and add some contrast with brunnera and bergenia.
Shady Areas of Winter:
You might have certain areas in your garden that are shady during winter, but get the full blast of summer sunshine. You would need plants that thrive in the summer sun and go dormant during winter time. Do not consider plants that would wilt in the summer sunshine. You could plant port wine magnolia, sacred bamboo, liriope, windflowers or canna lilies. Alternatively, you could create artificial shade in the summers, with the help of pergolas or plant a tree in that area so that it gets shade even in the summers.
Who would not want to live in a beautiful home? Adding a lovely garden to your property would be a nice idea, right? The shaded areas can prove to be tricky, but now you can see that it is not impossible. Just take the help of professional gardeners and landscape designers, to create mesmerizing areas all around your property.
