Hello World! Welcome Friends! So, your baby isn’t quite a baby anymore. Whether they’re transitioning into toddlerhood or about to start pre-K, at some point, you’re going to transition out of a nursery into a room that suits their “big kid” personality and changing needs. While it can be hard for your child, you as the parent, or both to say goodbye to the dreamy atmosphere of the nursery into a more mature room for your child, it’s an important step that needs to be taken. After all, upgrading your sleep space is beneficial as an adult. Why wouldn’t you give that gift to your child?
You may be wondering where to even begin this transition. Maybe you’re not that great at home improvements and design. Perhaps, like most parents, you’re just incredibly busy, and this project keeps getting put on the back burner. Thankfully, there are some easy, quick ways to upgrade your nursery to a children’s room, and they don’t even need to break the budget. Keep reading to get started!

Safety First
First on your list when you’re creating their big kid room should be safety! You want to keep in mind that your child is bigger now and exploring their new space, so keep things safe by making sure you have outlet covers on any outlets. Anchor furniture to the walls like dressers or bookshelves that could topple over during play or exploration. Most windows have locks on them, but since your child is bigger and likely taller now, you want to make sure that all windows have locks. And, speaking of locks, it’s worth getting a doorknob that can’t lock the door from the inside to avoid your child accidentally locking themselves in.
Keep Things Cohesive
One way to make your child’s room maintain that sense of peace and calm that nurseries possess is to make sure you keep things cohesive. You want to come up with a theme for your child’s room. While it’s tempting to go minimalist or keep things in the same decor style as the rest of your house, you also want to consider your children’s needs. Especially if your child will be transitioning from a crib to a toddler bed or regular size bed, incorporating sheets and window dressings that are their favorite character or animal can set them at ease. You can still keep a somewhat elevated look by using quality furniture and not letting their room overflow with toys if you go this route. You may still opt to keep things neutral if that’s your esthetic, in which case you want to make your furniture and accessories like lamps are more childlike and whimsical. The end game is to have a look you can live with, which also sparks your child’s joy and comfort. So, keep things cohesive and tasteful!
Consider A Playroom
Older children are easily distracted. If their nursery was home to a ton of their toys and all the gear that comes with a baby, like your diaper backpack, a diaper genie, and a bouncer, it’s worth minimizing the number of toys in their room. While you may be limited by room numbers or space, if you’re not, consider creating a playroom. This is another way to incentivize your child to embrace sleeping in their big bed too. But, playrooms also make it easy for your child to fall asleep in their big kid rooms because there are fewer distractions in the form of toys. Also, it goes without saying that a television in your young child’s room is never a good idea! So, while two room renovations may sound like a lot, if you’re already creating their big kid room, a playroom and recreation area may be in order too.
Get Your Kid On Board
If you don’t want to hire a decorator or may not be in your budget, it can be a fun experience to get your kid involved in their bedroom design process. Especially if they’ve been sneaking into your bedroom as a toddler to get in bed with you during the night, getting them involved with the design aspect of their room can get them excited about this part of maturing. Sure, you’re likely not going to let them have complete creative control (unless you want to) but, getting their input and allowing them to make some decisions is another lesson in independence for them – not to mention creativity!
It’s hard to watch our kids grow up, so time, after all, time does fly by! But, instilling independence in them is an essential aspect of our job as parents. One of the best ways you can do that is to keep them feeling like an individual and nourishing each level of growth they go through – that includes their living space. Happy renovating!
