Hello World! Welcome Friends! When renovating or redecorating a house you will probably spend a lot of time considering the right flooring for each room. Many people look at laminate because it appears significantly cheaper than a quality hardwood floor, such as this beautiful herringbone flooring Sydney.
However, before you follow the laminate path, you should note that hardwood flooring lasts significantly longer, making it a cheaper option in the long term! However, hardwood floors are not always the best option for bathrooms. These are the most humid rooms in the house and you need flooring that is resistant to water. Most hardwood floorings are not and they will develop water stains.
There are several reasons why laminate is a good choice for your bathroom:
- Waterproof
- Looks like real wood
- Easy to install yourself
- Protective layer on top helps reduce the likelihood of stains and watermarks
Of course, it is still a protective coating over a wood compound. That means you need to take precautions when installing.
Make Sure It Is Waterproof
Not all laminate is waterproof or suitable for the humidity of bathrooms. Check before you purchase and make sure the one you choose is waterproof. It will help it to last longer in your bathroom.
Silicone Sealant
If you are installing laminate flooring you should use a silicone sealant. This must be put at all the edges and any joins that can allow water through. Silicone creates an invisible barrier, preventing water from getting through and ruining your laminate. You may even find it is essential for warranty purposes.
Go Under Skirting
Your bathroom needs to have skirting around the edge. This will allow you to lay the laminate and still leave a small gap around the edge of the laminate. This gap allows the laminate to expands and contract, as wood tends to do. By adding skirting boards over the top and sealing the gap you will prevent moisture from getting into the floor and eliminate any issues with expansion or contraction.
Reduce Humidity
Humidity is the biggest enemy of your bathroom. It will be absorbed by the laminate potentially causing issues. It can also cause mold to grow and the spores from mold can be detrimental to your health.
In other words, make sure your bathroom has good ventilation and fit a fan to suck the warm air out and replace it with cooler, drier air. You may even want to use a dehumidifier.
Add Some Rugs
A great way to have the stylish look of laminate in your bathroom without the risk of damage is to add a couple of rugs. You will want to place these in the key water areas, such as where you step out of the shower, by the sink, etc.
These can be easily washed, changed with the changing décor, and protect your laminate from water damage. That makes them your new best friend and a necessity in your laminated bathroom. They also give the floor better grip, laminate can be surprisingly slippery when wet.
