Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you’re anything like us, you can’t help but get excited about spring, especially after a long and dreary winter.
As the brown landscapes start turning into a plush green color, and the dormant plants start to wake up, it’s time for us to get soaker hoses here, get our garden tools ready and get to work.
In order to make your garden work easier and less overwhelming, we’ve put together a list of top 6 tips for taking care of your garden this spring.
So follow these few simple spring gardening tips and you’ll be able to see wonderful results all year long.
Order Fruit Trees and Berry Bushes
Early spring is the best time to order and plant fruit trees and berry bushes. Make it your priority to make a plan of what you want to plant this spring and order or buy everything in the beginning of spring, so that you can plant everything by May at the latest.
Keep in mind that it will take a few years for the trees or bushes to start producing. And once they do you can even use them to stick to a low keto diet using the allowed fruits.
Get Summer-Flowering Bulbs and Seeds
Order new summer-flowering bulbs, or use the ones you stored before the winter. If you didn’t store last year’s flower bulbs away, then you can order new ones as early as late winter, or the beginning of spring.
There’s an array or bulbs, corms and tubers you can choose from, most of which can be planted directly in the soil, in grass or in containers, depending on the specific flower, or depending on your own preference.
You can also check out which plant and flower varieties are suitable for indoors.
Before you begin cleaning up your yard, getting your tools ready and prepping the soil, you’ll need to have all your bulbs and seeds ready.
Once you’re making the trip to the nursery, make sure to get your fertilizer as well, as you’ll need it to fertilize your flowers, grass and trees.
We’ll go over the fertilizing process in detail below.
Prep the Soil
Since winter weeds are probably starting to grow in your garden already, the first thing you’ll need to do before getting your soil ready for planting is to pull them all out. Leaving them for too long, will cause them to flower, produce seeds, and multiply, which will make your job of getting rid of them a whole lot harder.
Once you’ve gotten all the weeds out, hopefully forever, you’re ready to move on to the next step.
Fertilize
Once you get your garden, flower beds and borders prepped and free of weeds, your next step is to add some fertilizer and mix it into the soil. You can get store bought fertilizer, or use organic fertilizer, like compost, well-rotted manure, or recycled green waste. There are plenty of advantages to using organic fertilizer.
Empty up to 5 cm of fertilizer on the ground and mix it in with the soil.
Once this step is done, your garden will be ready for planting.
Start Planting
No matter if you have vegetables, flowers or fruit trees in your garden, once early spring comes you need to get those beds in shape and ready for spring planting.
Veggies such as leeks, onions, spinach, and parsley are among the first ones that can be planted in Spring. Depending on the climate, they can be planted in March or April – in northern climates.
You’ll need to put in some extra time in the spring, but once you get everything ready and planted, you’ll make it easier on yourself down the road. Putting a little extra work in spring will help you set up for a successful gardening season.
Early spring is the best time to start planting. You can get spring and summer flower seeds or bulbs that will make your garden pretty and colorful all through the season. In the meantime you can get started on your tomato and pepper seeds indoors so they can be ready for planting outside once the weather gets warmer.
If you want to use grown plants, instead of seeds you can check out your local nurseries and select the spring plants you want to plant.
Take Care of the Lawn
Taking care of your lawn is a big component of getting your garden ready for the new season.
Developing a spring lawn care routine will help you keep your lawn into shape throughout the year.
By spending a little bit of time and effort in the beginning of spring into mowing the lawn, fertilizing it and dealing with weeds, moss and bare patches you’ll improve your chances of having a green and luscious lawn the whole season.
Some of the most important spring lawn care steps include:
- Scarifying the lawn to get rid of buildup of dead grass, moss and other debris
- Aerating to improve the air circulation and help the lawn breathe better
- Regular mowing. Make sure to find a good mower, most new cordless electric lawn mowers are really efficient and effective nowadays.
- Feeding it with fertilizer in spring and again in summer
- Taking care of weeds, moss and bare patches before the weeds flower and spread
- Over seeding – or sowing new seeds into your existing lawn – which can help strengthen your lawn and give it new life.
