Hello World! Welcome Friends! Fire kills. It is that simple. In fact, home fires kill as many as 50 people per year while bushfires can kill several times more than this. In short, they can destroy your home, your livelihood, and take your life.
The good news is there are things you can do to make your home more resistant to wildfire. Of course, you should always be prepared to evacuate. Although the best home may not succumb to a wildfire, it will get extremely hot and uncomfortable. In this instance, your aim is to be able to get out safely.
Tidy Your Yard
Wildfires spread fast, especially when the vegetation is dead. This means it is dry and brittle. In other words, it will catch light fast. You can reduce the risk of this happening by clearing your gutters of dead vegetation regularly.
Alongside clearing gutters, you should ensure all firewood is at least 30 feet from your house and that trees and bushes are also a good distance away.
You can also reduce the risk of wildfires affecting your home by installing metal angles at the edge of your roof, replacing the roof with fire-retardant materials, and even metal cladding the outside of your home
Safeguard A Way Out
In most cases, you will have plenty of warning regarding a bush fire. However, there are times when this is not the case and you need the extra protection of a safe way out. This starts with some detectors to warn you of the issue.
Alongside these, smoke curtains can drop automatically when the alarm sounds, creating a barrier that will withhold even the fiercest fire for a short period. The aim is to create a safe passage out of the house and potentially protect part of the house from the fire while the fire services get to you.
Sprinkler System
Although large areas of the country suffer from water shortages you can create a borehole that allows you to access water yourself. This can then be connected to a pump and sprinkler system that keeps the grass near the edge of your property damp. This may not be enough to prevent a bush fire from reaching you but it can certainly slow it. You can also use the water in your home, reducing your water bill.
The First 5 Feet
Don’t forget that the first five feet of your garden next to your house are the most vulnerable. You need to be aggressive about maintaining these areas. That means removing combustible items, including furniture and garbage. You should clear all fallen leaves and other vegetation and make sure that the first five feet are made of non-combustible materials, such as gravel and stone
This will make it much harder for the fire to reach your home.
Alongside this, make sure you keep an eye on any warning systems and take additional precautions when a bush fire has started anywhere near your property.
