Hello World! Welcome Friends! If your home was built in the previous centuries, you might find it essential to carry out window replacement. People replace windows for different reasons like broken panes, energy efficiency, or to give the home a new look. Whatever the reason you are replacing your windows, you need this project to be successful.
If you installed the current windows on your own and did a good job, you might be tempted to do a DIY on the replacement windows as well. Whether this is a good idea or not depends on whether you are an expert DIY or not. WindowTech Windows and Doors recommend hiring a professional to do window replacement for you if you are not sure of the project. However, if you have decided to DIY your windows, here are some thing you ought to know.
1. Types of Window Replacement
Insert Replacement Windows
These windows come with a frame and everything else assembled. You fix the new frame to the existing one, and they result in a smaller window than the previous one.
Full-Frame Windows
For the full-frame, you will replace the entire window, including the frame. To fit, you first need to uninstall the old structure to fit the new one into the window space.
2. Challenges You Will Face with Replacement Windows
If you have installed a new window by yourself, the experience might not be the same as doing a window replacement. You have to ensure that the new window will fit perfectly on the window space for these. You will also need to reshape the frame until you get a size that will work well into the sash.
Installing a full-frame window becomes a challenge because you have to strip down the window’s opening. That is why we are saying that it might not be a simple task to do it yourself. Replacement windows have essential steps that should be taken care of by an expert. If you aimed to upgrade energy efficiency, the new replacement window might not serve its purpose well if wrongly installed. In some cases working with commercial window repair specialists is a better option. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a DIY approach but it’s always important to be aware of your limitations and when to seek professional help.
Look at some of the reasons we are saying a DIY window replacement might be challenging.
Measuring
You have to get the correct measurements of your window to get the right size of a replacement window. Measurements are taken on the width of the frame, from one jamb to another. It would help if you also had measurements of the height, from the middle, left, and right. Check if the frame is a square or has a different shape. The sill angle requires to be measured using a unique tool. You will use these measurements to get the right replacement window.
Uninstalling the Jamb and Sash
You will start removing the window sash by removing the sash stops first. Carefully unscrew them off, and store them safely, especially if you will use them again. The sash is held onto the frame by parting beads. You will also need to remove these. Ensure you remove all jamb liners. A flat level bar will come in handy for you when removing the liners. It is not an easy process, be careful.
Prepare the Window Frame
Look if there are holes on the frame and fill them with wood putty. Also, sand the frame smooth and apply a new coat of paint. Remove the sash pulley system.
Insulating
After removing the panel that houses the window’s sash, you will be able to re-insulate the window’s interior frame. Make sure you remove any fiberglass insulation before you start the process. Ensure you follow all necessary steps of insulation for your window to be energy efficient.
Installing the New Window
Start with the inside of your house. Put the bottom part of the window into the existing opening. Push it in slowly to fit and screw the sides to secure it. Add shims below the frame to make sure it is centered. Putting a shim behind the frame and screwing them will prevent the frame from bowing. You can trim the shims with a knife after installation. Fill any gaps with caulk and insulate the large ones using foam rubber. Finish by applying a coat to make the window more appealing.
