Hello World! Welcome Friends! For most of us, our home is not a place where we just eat, sleep, and repeat. Home is more than a physical space for us. It is a center of our solace and peace. There are many countless memories attached to our houses. People are emotionally attached to their houses as they have spent a substantial amount of their lives or aspire to spend in it in their lives ahead. Especially in our fast-paced urban lifestyle, our homes are the center point to strengthen our family bonds too. Thus, our homes are valuable to us sentimentally even more than their market valuation.
Additionally, the subject of owning or renting out a house has a financial aspect too. It is one of the biggest lifetime investments for people. Even if it is rented out; a substantial amount of money goes in it as a monthly expense. Hence, it is important that we upkeep our houses, not as a daily or weekly routine chore but consider it as the safeguarding of your asset and taking care of your sentimental values. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate, reconsider, and act furiously to prevent the house from any possible damage. Otherwise, any major overhaul in case of any unwanted emergency or catastrophe can put a serious dent in your financial standing.
Similarly, it is wise to approach house care on preventive levels rather than reacting when things are out of hand. One must ponder deeply to gauge, maintain, and upgrade their houses with the possibilities of catastrophes or unexpected scenarios in mind. There are many possibilities of things gone wrong like fire situations, earthquakes, power failures, and you can see more over the internet to take a broader perspective, which we usually don’t perceive. And if preventive measures are taken in advance, it can seriously save a massive amount of time, money, and inconvenience.
Let’s look at some of the tips and strategies to upgrade your home for any unexpected scenario:
Fire Safety:
One of the most common disasters possible around is fire. One small mistake or lackluster behavior can cause such fire that can cause serious damage very quickly. Usually, fire happens due to short circuits in the electric boards, campfire around, or barbeque grills, etc. In some instances, it can also happen due to natural lightning too. No matter whatever the cause would be, it is important that there are adequate measures to prevent or reduce the likelihood of such events. Some of the basic tips are:
- Set up Fire Detectors and Fire Extinguishers.
- Use Fire-resistant construction material when building, if possible.
- Don’t store flammable or ignitable fuel sources in the house.
- Set up Fire Sprinklers.
- Cover all the electrical wiring set up across the property.
Most importantly, check the fire extinguishers regularly that they are working properly, and have fire safety equipment like gloves and thick shoes to avoid casualties if a fire breaks out.
Break-Ins or Burglaries:
It can be a mind-boggling and life-shattering experience to be burglarized or affected by a home invasion. You would lose your valuable possessions, besides, to feel scared and alienated in your house after such an experience. Therefore, there needs to be a solid security system to keep sanity and home safe. And there are many affordable ways to ensure such protection:
- Secure the front door as it is the easiest and favorite entry point of burglars.
- Secure glass doors and sliding windows with metal or wooden rod in addition to locks.
- Keep the backyard and garden always tidy as it gives an impression of people around, and burglars avoid such houses.
- Place the signs around that implies that the house has security alarms.
- Don’t hide spare keys under or around obvious places. Instead, hand them over to your neighbors.
- Lastly, install CCTV cameras with 24/7 recording in and around the house.
Power Outage:
Power outages can happen anytime at any place, and that can stay for hours and hours without any clarity of when it will be restored. Most of our utilities are dependent on electricity, and it is essential to have an emergency plan and a clear line of action in place to manage and survive during such a power cut. Some of the useful tips to consider are:
- Usually, power outages occur due to weather. One must need to stay updated with regular weather updates with mobile apps and stay mindful about any abnormal development.
- Spare at least 3 days of emergency supplies.
- Use surge protection power bars or power stabilizers to protect sensitive electronic appliances.
- Powers Generator can also be installed, but make sure that it has enough power capacity as per your needs and seek professional help while installing.
- Keep a non-powered phone in spare, as landline can still work without power.
- Keep flashlights available with extra working batteries inaccessible and easy to find places.
Natural Disasters:
Natural Disasters are beyond human control, and one can only prepare for the worst. Natural Disasters like floods, earthquakes, wildfires, etc., put millions of lives and properties worth billions under danger, therefore, everyone must have prevention and emergency plans in place to avoid or minimize the overall damage. Some of the measures that anyone can take are:
- Get Home Insurance. Make sure that it covers the damages in case of natural disasters. Most of the insurance policies don’t cover such a possibility. Therefore, look out for better options.
- Solidify the Foundations of the house. If you live in the areas that experience earthquakes, it is essential to bolt the house to the foundation to prevent it from being separated from its foundation.
- Repair the Cracks and Holes. In case of a flood, floodwater can enter into the foundation through such cracks, and it will become difficult to save flooring, walls, etc.
- Learn to turn off the Utilities. It is recommended to turn off the utilities in case of flood or gas leaks. But usually, people are unaware of how to do such a basic task.
Conclusion:
Life is unpredictable, and nature can be harsh. It is important to consider all the possible threats and prepare for them. There is a situation when things would be beyond control. Hence evacuation plans are required to be in place to avoid injuries and ensure the safety of your loved ones.
