Hello World! Welcome Friends! Summer is fast approaching and if you don’t start preparing for it, before you know it, it will have come and gone. For a lot of us, summer is the best time of the year. It’s when you can start socializing outside, have people over for bbq’s, the sun goes down later and most importantly – you can get your summer wardrobe out.
We just touched on it, a major part of summer is having people over. Having people over means getting your home prepared as soon as possible, so that you avoid the stress of worrying what people think when they visit. Part of getting your home ready for summer involves focusing on your garden, getting the big DIY jobs out the way, investing in a good air con system (there is nothing worse than trying to escape the sun but not being able to) and switching up your accessories.
Avoid the stress of having to rush jobs and start preparing for summer now. Below we have put together a guide on a few things you should start thinking about before summer arrives.
Get the Big DIY Jobs Out of the Way
When planning on what changes to make, start with the big DIY jobs first. These take longer to complete and can require a certain length of time to finish – you may need to outsource certain services if you can’t do them yourself. Your budget could play an important factor on what jobs you are able to carry out first, so make sure you take a moment to sit down and set a number to each project – it’s important to be realistic, this way you don’t overspend. If you are unsure on what things cost, you could get a few quotes from your local companies to give you an idea.
Focus on Your Garden
A big focus point of summer will be spending time in your garden. This means dedicating time focusing on it and getting it ready before the sun is out and people are coming round for bbq’s. Things to consider is whether your fences or shed needs a repaint? Do you need to pressure wash your paving? A mow of your lawn is almost certain and so is clearing up your flowerbeds (often these can take a battering during the winter months). You may also want to consider buying new furniture for your garden for yourself and guests to enjoy when out in the sun. Another area to look into which can make a big difference is having someone come in and look at your landscaping.
Invest In a Good Air Con System
We all know how miserable it feels when you are overheating! When the sun is out and you can’t escape its heat, this can be very unpleasant and ruin what was otherwise a really lovely day you are having. Investing in a good air con system in your home, allows you to offer another area where you can host as well as a place to refresh and rejuvenate when the sun is too hot. When looking for a good air con system, make sure you read the reviews and check that it has all the functionality that you will need. Things to look out for that may benefit you are: sleep mode, number of airflow speeds, temperature sensors, how noisy it is and can it be controlled with a remote.
Switch Up Your Accessories
Every well presented home will feature a range of accessories. Accessories offer a whole new dynamic to the room, making it look more presentable. They can be anything from rugs on the floor and throws on the sofa to ornaments and candles on your console table (if you buy candles, look for candle gift sets as you can then place multiple candles around your home, saving you money). Accessories can be switched around depending on the month or season to help keep your home fresh and updated. Instagram is a great place to look if you are after inspiration on the different types of accessories people use to decorate their home.
Plants, Plants and More Plants
We can’t speak more highly on using plants to get your home ready for the summer. They add color to a room, they help reduce stress, they can fit into the smallest of places and can be moved around to help freshen up different rooms. There are a whole myriad of plants that you can choose from when looking to buy one from your home. When choosing, try to think about the space it will be in and how it will match your interiors. Make sure it has a touch of your own personality as this will be reflected in your home.
Have a Big Spring Clean
By simply spending a day or two having a big clean of your home, can make a big difference to how it looks. Dedicate some time to going through your cupboards and removing any trash that you may have collected. Any clothes that you no longer need can go to the charity shop and spend some time cleaning hard to get to places (we all put this off on our weekly clean). As it’s your big spring clean, you may need to enlist help from your family or friends to make it more enjoyable and ask them to be ruthless when doing – sometimes it can be hard to throw things out even if deep down you know you don’t need it.
Re-Paint Your Walls
Repainting your walls is a quick job, doesn’t cost you a lot and can make a big difference to how your home looks. Removing any scratches and marks on your walls can quickly make the room look as good as new. If you are going to repaint, this could be a good opportunity to change the color of your walls and to repaint them in a different color. If you are going down the route of changing the color, consider buying samples first to see what color you want to change it too. Also remember, repainting requires more coats of pain than touching up. Repainting your dining room can be a good place to start as this is where you may have guests when eating.
Clean Out Your Gutters
It’s not the most fun job but does need doing, especially as summer approaches. The longer you leave your gutters unclean, the more likely it is for them to block, cause damage to your property and make its surrounding areas smell. Over the winter months, a lot of damage can be done to your gutters due to the wind and rain, therefore it’s important you prioritize this – if you don’t want to do it, you can get an expert in but this will come at a cost. Plus, if you have guests going over, you don’t want to be embarrassed by the state of your gutters as you haven’t spent any time cleaning them.
Clean Your Windows
Whilst on the subject of cleaning and clearing out, you want to spend a moment giving your windows a clean. The longer you leave them dirty the more moss that can grow on them and dirty watermarks (which can turn a horrible black color). When the weather is nice outside, get a bucket and sponge and go over all your windows, ensuring they are nice and clean. This is another job you can outsource if you have the budget and don’t fancy doing it yourself.
Create Light and Bright Spaces
Most likely you will have certain rooms in your home where you plan to host guests or relax yourself. These spaces you want to spend extra time on and prioritize them when getting your home ready for summer. As part of making them ready, aim to create light and bright spaces within them, increasing the appeal of relaxing in the rooms. Consider adding colorful furniture pieces like cushions or slipcovers. If you have a rug in the room, make sure it’s colorful and bright as well as this can impact the overall feel of a room hugely. Of course, reducing how much the curtains cover your windows will also help.
There are so many different things that you can do to get your home ready for summer. Start by making a list and putting them in order of priority. We recommend starting the bigger job now and then ending with the smaller jobs – this way they will be completed in time. Try not to overwhelm yourself with changes as you want to keep the process as stress-free as possible. And remember to create a budget for big changes and stick to it.
