Hello World! Welcome Friends! Having expansive windows is a key selling point for people when they’re looking for a new home, but what if you don’t have that feature with your existing home?
There are ways you make your windows look larger and also generally more high-end, with some DIY projects and smart design tips like the ones listed below.
Hang Shades and Curtains High
If you cover your windows with blinds, it’s best to measure them and make sure you get a precise, custom fit, but if you’re option for window coverings like a bamboo or Roman shade, you can actually make your windows look larger by hanging them higher.
Hang the shade a few inches above the actual top of the window, and then hang your curtain rod (if you have one), several inches above that, near the ceiling.
If you do hang your curtains above the actual window, or even if you don’t, make sure they extend to the ceiling to elongate windows.
Layer Window Coverings
Laying window coverings can be a great option to not only draw the eye toward windows but also make them look larger. Consider adding a shade or blinds, and then a valence. To make the width of the windows look larger, you can then add long curtain panels.
When you hang panels, not only hang them higher than the window but also outside of the width of the window as well.
Many professional decorators recommend having rod overhang of around 15 inches from the edge of the windows. Another recommended measurement option is to go with a curtain rod that’s 60 to 80 percent wider than the window, including the entirety of the molding.
Go With Vertical Patterns
When you’re choosing window coverings, particularly curtain panels, opt for vertical patterns whenever possible.
As is true with clothing, vertical window coverings will extend the apparent length of a window and make it look taller.
Add DIY Moldings
If you love a good DIY project, moldings can be a fantastic way to make windows look bigger and also to make your home look customized and high-end. You can make windows appear longer by adding stacked moldings above the top of your actual window frame as well as below it.
You can also add moldings around the perimeter of the windows to make them look larger in terms of width as well.
As a final note, if you want your windows to look bigger from the outside, adding window boxes can be a good idea. When you add a window box below your window, hang it a bit lower than the actual bottom point of the window, and use plants in it that drape and flow downward.
There are plenty of great ways you can make windows look larger from the inside and outside, including many of which that are as simple as adding certain window coverings, and others that require some DIY project time, such as creating custom moldings.
