Hello World! Welcome Friends! It can be a lot of fun to take your parent on special vacations. It can be nice to get away for awhile and spend quality time together. When your parent is getting older, though, it can be more difficult to just get up and go wherever you would like. You must consider how traveling with a person of limited mobility will affect your plans and proceed accordingly. This does not mean that you cannot have a fun and meaningful trip, though. It just requires a little bit of extra planning on your part. Try to choose destinations that your parent will still be able to enjoy without feeling left out of the activities.
Choose a Guided Bus or Train Tour
There are many train and bus tours throughout the country, and these trips can be great for those who cannot walk long distances. Your mom or dad can still enjoy the sights of a place without having to trek a long way. These tours often have special accommodations for those with physical handicaps. Just make sure that you plan in advance so that things will move seamlessly when you board.
Choose a Relaxing Destination
A trip that involves a lot of travel every day may not be the right choice for your aging parent. You can choose a destination that is relaxing, such as the beach. You and your family can spend the day by the pool or ocean and just enjoy being together. You can even take things for a special picnic if you would like.
Choose Handicap-Accessible Accommodations
It is important that you choose a hotel or resort that is handicap accessible. If your mother or father is in a wheelchair, you may need a larger room and bathroom. Discuss your specific needs with the hotel ahead of time so that everything can be ready when you arrive. It can also be helpful to have a room on the first floor so that you do not have to worry about going up and down the elevator all the time with your loved one in a wheelchair.
Traveling with an elderly relative does take some extra planning, but it can still be a trip that everyone enjoys. Consider these practical ways to make the vacation easier on everyone involved. For those interested in planning a trip, brainstorm ideas with your parent to see where they would like to spend some time together.
