Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you’ve been outdoors in the spring and summer for any amount of time, then you know that pests love to gather around the pool, deck, and anyone who might be hanging out there at the time.
Now that you’ve decided that building an outdoor kitchen to feed your family and guests is a good idea for this upcoming summer season, you’re going to want to deal with pests even more than you did before. If you’re wondering how to keep the pests out of your yard, your pool area, and your outdoor kitchen, read on for a few tips that might be helpful.
Invest In a Fan
Mosquitos especially love to descend on humans when they’re congregating around water and in their own backyards. Investing in a fan can help to keep those pesky and dangerous bugs away from you and your family. Believe it or not, mosquitoes aren’t strong fliers and even the slightest breeze can blow them away. A well-placed fan will keep them from landing and destroying your day by the pool. It’s best to get a couple of oscillating fans as they turn and can cover a larger area. As a bonus, you’ll end up with a nice, cool breeze as well.
Get Out the Citronella
Mosquitos have a natural aversion to anything citronella related. Try keeping a few citronella candles on your tables and inside the outdoor kitchen. It’s also a good idea to have a few citronella plants in your outdoor area also, to keep the mosquitoes away when you’re inside and the candles can’t be lit.
Remove Any Standing Water
If at all possible, remove any type of standing water, as it attracts mosquitoes by the hundreds. If you’re not able to remove standing water, say in the bird bath in the yard, then there are things you can buy to put in the water that will make any mosquitoes that land there sterile, so you don’t have to worry about them breeding in your bird bath and yard.
Use an Effective Bug Repellent
It’s also important, even when using the methods above, that you use an effective mosquito repellent. Repellents with DEET are your best bet. Don’t forget to reapply it to the children and yourself throughout the day, especially after you get out of the pool.
Use Dryer Sheets
When all else fails, pinning a dryer sheet to your clothes has been known to chase mosquitoes away. There’s something about the smell they don’t like, so it’s worth a try. What do you have to lose and you’ll smell good to boot.
Professional Pest Control
Mosquitos aren’t the only pests you have to worry about when you’re in the yard during the summer. Ants, gnats, wasps, and other insects can be a bother as well. A reliable pest control company can spray your yard and the surrounding areas as well to help you combat and prevent the pests from invading your party.
Know the Dangers
It’s important to know the dangers of mosquitoes even when you’re trying to prevent them from flocking to your backyard during a party. The bites are itchy and can get infected if you’re not careful, but being bitten by them can also lead to other dangers. There are quite a few diseases, including the Zika virus, that you can get by being bitten by these pests. Know the signs and symptoms, as well as the dangers so you can get help if needed.
These are just a few tips for getting rid of the pests that descend on a backyard during the summer months. Make sure that you follow the tips above so that you have a safe summer filled with fun, not with itchy bites.
