Hello World! Welcome Friends! Everyone who likes to keep anything soon realizes that their mementos are turning into piles of clutter. It tends to sneak up on you when you least expect it. One moment you have a cupboard under the stairs and the next minute you have to slam the door quickly every time you throw something in there. It’s not easy to manage clutter, but once you have a handle on it you can really just call it storing your things again.
It’s a human instinct to feel attached to things but it’s not always easy to stay on top of getting rid of things that are years out of date for you. Realistically, you should be getting rid of things that you’re not using every six months at the minimum, but it doesn’t always work that way, especially when you can’t seem to let it go. You deserve to live somewhere uncluttered and tidy, but you can’t do that if you’re constantly keeping everything you’ve ever owned and not getting rid of things. So, with this in mind, let’s take a look at the tips you need for decluttering your home that just make sense.
- Get motivated. What is your end goal with your decluttering? It’s good to have a goal so that you know what to work towards. Where are you starting with your decluttering? What do you want the end result to look like? If you’re struggling to decide whether to get rid of an item or not, you should consider whether it’s important to your overall goals for your home.
- Don’t buy an organizer to help you with organizing. The problem with organizers is that you can pile the home up with more organizers while you’re trying to organize. You then end up stuffing your space and that’s not the point of it. You want to wait until you’ve decluttered your stuff before you go ahead and stick everything into organizers. You can then measure your shelves and storage spaces properly, and then buy organizers that will work for the space.
- Let go of what doesn’t bring you joy. You might have heard about the Marie Kondo way of organizing things so get rid of the low-hanging fruit. The things that are not as emotionally attaching can be let go of easier than others. Marie Kondo talks about letting go of the things in your life that do not bring you joy. Do you need fifty two ties in the wardrobe? Probably not! Go through your things and make an inventory of everything and start getting into the decluttering swing of things instead.
- Make sure that you put time limits on things. Giving all of your items an expiration date is important. If you’re scared to part with something ‘just in case’, then you know you need to let it go because there really is no ‘just in case’ for anything unless you have a purpose. If you don’t use something within 6-12 months, you don’t need it, so get rid of it and stop leaning on it or hoarding it. That’s what this ends up being: a chance for you to hoard.
- Declutter a little at a time. A great tip that you need for decluttering is just to spend a few minutes every day doing it, not swathes of time. Hours and hours of time on decluttering is unnecessary. Instead, give yourself a time limit of 20 minutes a day and you won’t feel like decluttering is a chore. You need to make hard calls and that means giving yourself the time to do that, but not spending so much time that you end up needing to declutter yourself!
- Consider the costs of keeping things. How much of your home real estate are you using on storing clutter? How much is that costing you overall? Insurance in your home is great but if you’re insuring a house that is mostly cluttered, you’re literally wasting your money.
Decluttering should be something you do to free your mind and your home of any baggage. Take the time and make space to declutter and you’ll find that you feel better for it overall. Without the time taken,
