Hello World! Welcome Friends! Whether you are building an electrical system in your new home or upgrading the previous system, safety and durability should be the priority. Most homeowners do not pay much attention when it comes to electrical wires and go for cheaper materials. The result of this neglect can be astronomical. According to research, over 400 people die every year due to electrocutions and at least 4000 people get injured. So electrification of the house should be done keenly. Let’s explore the tips for choosing the right wires and cables!
1. The Correct Size
The size of the wire refers to the diameter of the conductor which is directly related to the amount of current that passes through the wire per second. In easier terms, the size of the wire is a direct measure of its current carrying capacity. The size should be selected according to the potential usage. For example, for wiring heavy electronic machinery more diameter is required as compared to the diameter required for a bulb. If the diameter and usage are not correctly matched, the chances of a short circuit increase.
2. Check the Labelling
You need more information than just the size and diameter of the wire before you use it in your home electrification. The wires contain labels that provide accurate information about the usage and characteristics of the encased wire. Study the label carefully to check whether the description of the wire matches your requirements. If a wire does not contain a label, do not buy it at any cost.
3. Direct Burial Cable
If you are buying wires and cables for outdoor or underground wiring then you need a special type of cable called “direct burial cable”. The wires used inside the home are designed to provide protections that are not required underground. Direct burial cable contains a core embedded with vinyl which keeps the moisture away from the metal. Using these wires outside will prevent unwanted mishaps. Stainless steel cable markers should also be used in places where the highest marker durability is required in harsh conditions.
4. Wire Insulation
Make sure that you use the heavily insulated wires in your home. Select a wire that has three coatings.
- The first layer is water resistant.
- The second layer is heat or temperature resistant.
- The third layer is fire retardant.
Check the highest temperature endurance of the words and select the one with an upper limit of at least 100 degrees. It will ensure safety and protection.
5. High-Quality Material
When it comes to the protection of yourself and your family, do not compromise. A few extra bucks for a good quality wire is worth it to be safe from any unwanted disasters. Electrical wires are made of copper and aluminum – both materials are safe and can be used. But when it comes to the house wiring, prefer copper cables. Make sure to select the wires that have more features than just being a conducting material. It is better to choose wires with an ISI mark – a sign of high quality.
