Hello World! Welcome Friends! Wood floors are beautiful floors, warm and lovely. But is your floor dull and lustreless? Is the wood stained and scratched? It might be time to get it refinished, but where to start? How do you even begin to understand what a wood floor refinishing cost should be? How do you find a great company to do the work?
It’s tempting to call up contractors and ask what your job might cost, just to start getting an idea. But the first thing to understand is that there is no set cost. Every job is different. Your floor might be a quick and easy job, just sanding down a few small rooms and putting on a natural finish. But you might also have more stains and scratches that would require more sanding or even boards that will need replacing. And if you have stairs, your cost will vary depending on what kind of stairs.

Any reputable contractor will need to take a look at your individual floor before they can quote you a price. Never jump into a project based on an estimate you got over the phone. You might be shocked when the final bill comes in much higher than you anticipated.

And, speaking of reputable contractors, it is well worth checking out online reviews like those on Angie’s List. Don’t rule anyone out based on one or two bad reviews. Some customers are just unreasonable. But if the contractor only has one or two stars or many reviewers have written up horror stories, stay away! It’s also a good idea to see if a contractor has been in business for more than a few years and if they are members of the Better Business Bureau or a similar organization.
Remember, you want to make sure the people who refinish your floors have protection in case of any accidents or mishaps. And you want to make sure you are protected from any financial liability. That means you need to make sure your contractor is licensed and bonded according to your state and local laws and that they are fully insured, including worker’s compensation insurance. It might cost a little more to hire a licensed company that carries all the appropriate insurance, but it could save you an arm and a leg in the long run! If something does go wrong, insurance can help bring everything back to normal.
Finally, once you have found a great contractor and your floors are restored to their beautiful, glowing selves, make sure to maintain them. You should only need to refinish every seven to ten years if you keep up with maintenance. That includes dust mopping daily, cleaning weekly with the right kind of cleaner, and polishing quarterly.
If it’s time to refinish, just keep in mind the above tips, and you’ll be able to find a great company in no time, and avoid having any contractor horror stories of your own. And then, once the work is done, you can sit back and enjoy the warm glow of your refinished floors, just like new.
