Hello World! Welcome Friends! So, you’ve decided to work with the top architecture firm in Melbourne, and now you want to know what to expect. While the general experience of working with architects does share many features and traits, it has to be said that there are thousands of architects across Australia representing many hundreds of companies, so it’s not likely that any two experiences will be identical.
If you’re engaging an architecture firm for your next home design, building or major renovations project, then here are some important things to know about working with architects.
1. Some Who Call Themselves Architects Might Not Be
You should know that there are some people out there who call themselves architects who are in fact not. To be a true architect, one has to be recognized by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA). The organization currently has around 12,000 members in both practice and education, but it’s an unfortunate truth that there are some who are claiming the name architect who are actually perhaps just a designer.
Don’t get us wrong, many building and interior designers are very talented, and can deliver you tremendous value, but there are times when you absolutely need to work with a recognized architect, such as when you’re performing major renovations or conducting an entirely new build. Nothing else will do. Always ask to see the credentials of any architect or firm you work with.
2. It’s Often More Economical Than You Think
Some people avoid working with an architect because they’re afraid of spiraling costs. Get a designer and a builder and that’s enough, they think. Well, for minor renovation jobs with minimum construction or structural alterations, that actually might be the case. It’s true that you don’t need an architect when you’re just redecorating.
Ignoring an architect when you need one, however, can lead to expensive mistakes being made such as structural flaws not being spotted and having to be repaired later on at great expense of both money and time. Hiring an architect will invariably save you both money and time when you’re preparing for a big project.
3. Their Job is Prioritize Your Needs and Wants
If you’re talking to a number of architects and are wondering which of them to work with, a good rule of thumb is to pick the one that puts your needs and wants ahead of everything. Architects that will work hard to incorporate your vision, and are not constantly trying to talk you out of that vision in favor of what they think would be superior, are the ones you should favor.
4. An Architect Is Not Always a Great “People Person”
Architects can be a little temperamental, because they do actually have quite a strong artistic side to them, even though what they do looks a lot more like science or engineering on paper. Following on from the previous point, you shouldn’t be totally surprised if any architect voices a little opposition to a vision you have, even coming across as curt as they do so. They’re not always great with people. They prefer to be lost in their own world of art and design.
5. You Shouldn’t Be Offended If Your Home Doesn’t Make “The Wall”
After you’ve completed a project with your architect, don’t get offended or alarmed if they don’t start taking photos of the completed job to use in their marketing materials or post up on their display wall in the office. Some firms only reserve that privilege for very major projects that they are involved in, and those displayed cases may actually only represent a fraction of the total clients they have worked with.
