Hello World! Welcome Friends! Adding a ceiling fan to your home can save you a lot of money on heating and cooling costs, without sacrificing comfort. A ceiling fan can make a room feel several degrees cooler or warmer, depending on the direction of the blades, which means you can set your thermostat accordingly.
Whether you’re replacing an outdated fan or installing one in a space that previously had no fan, you need to make sure you’re choosing the right fixture for your room and home. Ceiling fans these days are available in exciting styles to match every homeowner’s decor, and with a range of features to meet your needs. Here are the things you should consider when shopping for your next fan.
1) The Size of Your Room
Ceiling fans need to be sized properly for the square footage of the space they’ll be in. A fan that is too small won’t move air effectively, and a large fan could be overpowering in more ways than one.
Ceiling fan sizes are measured across the blade span. You can buy fans as small as 29 inches across, to as large as 60 inches across or larger. For rooms up to 75 square feet, choose a fan under 36 inches. For rooms 75 to 144 square feet, choose a 36- to 42-inch fan. For rooms 145 to 225 square feet, choose a 44- to 50-inch fan. For rooms 225 to 400 square feet, choose a 50- to 54-inch fan. Larger fans are available for even larger rooms.
2) Your Ceiling’s Height and Pitch
Ceiling fans need to be a minimum of eight inches from the ceiling in order to move air effectively. If you have high ceilings, a longer downrod might be necessary so that the fan is close enough for you to feel the air movement. If you have a pitched ceiling, a downrod can help the fan’s blades get the clearance they need to turn. Your fan should be eight or nine feet from the floor — high enough that no one will hit their head, but low enough to be effective. You can buy ceiling fan downrods size 12 to 72 inches, and many fans will come with a short downrod. If you have low ceilings, low-profile, flush mount fans help you get as close to them as possible.
3) Are You Installing Indoors or Outdoors?
Not all ceiling fans are safe to install outdoors. Indoor fans aren’t weatherproofed, and won’t last long in an outdoor installation. Make sure you buy an indoor/outdoor or outdoor-rated fan if you’re installing your fan outdoors. If you live on the seaside, a marine-rated outdoor fan is the best choice to stand up to the corroding effects of salt winds.
4) Do You Need a Light Fixture?
In many spaces, you need a light fixture as well as the climate control of a fan. The exception might be an airy kitchen or great room with plenty of large windows or other lamps and light fixtures around the room. You’ll have no shortage of options when it comes to ceiling fans with built-in light fixtures, so it really comes down to choosing a fixture that works with your decor, and whether you want fluorescent or LED lighting.
5) Other Fan Features
These days, ceiling fans come with a range of features that might improve performance or make a fan easier to use. Wall controls or a remote control can be a must for a fan in a large, high-ceilinged room. Some fans even come with smart connectivity, so you can control your fan and lighting via smartphone app.
Fans also come with a range of functional features like motor grade and blade pitch. If you plan to use your new fan heavily, it might be worth buying one with a performance grade or medium grade fan motor. One measurement you’ll probably want to look for, however, is the cubic feet per minute (CFM) rating, which tells you how much air the fan moves when it’s turned up all the way. The higher the CFM, the more powerful the fan.
A ceiling fan can make a huge difference to your decor and your home’s temperature, all year round. Choose the right size, style, and strength for your space, and enjoy years of comfort and reduced energy bills.
