Hello World! Welcome Friends! Springtime is quickly approaching. The ice is thawing out, and the cold weather morphs into rain that will sustain the new plant growth over the spring. When you’re a homeowner, this time signals more than just a change of temperature. With the turn of the seasons, you need to keep your home in shape by taking care of it. Even if you haven’t neglected your house during the winter, you’ll find plenty of things to work on that you can only do in this particular time of spring.
1. Declutter Your Clothes
Now that the coldest season of the year has passed, you’ll likely change out your wardrobe to accommodate the warmer weather. While you move clothes in and out of your closet or dresser, consider looking at them and noting whether you wear them and want to keep them or if they’re just taking up space in your house.
The KonMari Method states that you should go through your clothes by seeing what “sparks joy” — that is, what makes you happy to hold and think about — and getting rid of anything that doesn’t. Following this method of tidying can ensure that you have plenty of room for new clothes in the coming months.
2. Plan for Spring Cleaning
Springtime means that spring cleaning is right around the corner. This thorough cleaning is vital for things that are only cleaned semi-regularly. Take time to clean out your fridge, pantry, dishwasher and other appliances and areas you may forget about often. Sitting down and writing out a checklist is the best way to get organized and ready for spring cleaning.
3. Check for Pests
Pests will rear their ugly heads and emerge from hibernation as the weather warms up. Termites are one pest that you should watch out for, specifically if any part of your home is made of wood. Termites can be an aggravating pest, and they cost billions in damage each year in the United States. Spring is usually when you discover termites hiding because it’s prime time for colonies to start moving around. Catch them before they become a significant problem in your house.
4. Replace Your Windows
If you haven’t noticed your windows being an issue in the winter, you’ll surely see when the temperature creeps up, and you notice all your cool air escaping. Old windows are a significant source of drafts in the winter, but they can be detrimental in the summertime for a similar reason: the gaps or rotting parts of old windows can allow the inside air to escape and outside air to leak in. Replace your old windows with newer models that can save you money on your power bills each month.
5. Inspect Your Roof
After a long winter, one in which you may have had snow and ice on your roof, your home deserves a break. Treat it right by getting its exterior inspected so you know it’ll last through the spontaneous springtime storms.
Your roof could have been bearing ice over the cold season, so when you can afford to have someone climb onto your room to look for any holes, missing shingles or other damage, do so. Once you know your roof is in good shape, you can look forward to all spring has to offer.
6. Clean Your Gutters
Long, cold winters often lead to snow, then ice occupying your gutters. As the ice melts and refreezes, your gutters might bend to accommodate the stress. You should give your gutters a fresh start this spring by having a professional clear them of any debris that may have accumulated over the past few months. By regularly maintaining your gutters, you’ll likely avoid a disaster that could cause your gutters to fail.
7. Optimize Your Air Conditioning
Spring is here, which means the warm weather will soon follow. Optimizing your home for the warmer months includes adjusting your air conditioning and ensuring it works properly. An air conditioning unit lasts no more than 20 years, though you may want to replace it around the 15-year mark. By repairing or continuing routine preventative maintenance on your air conditioning unit, you stand to have an excellent spring and summer.
8. Power Wash Your Home
If you can’t remember the last time you power washed your home, this section is your sign to do it. Even if your house doesn’t look visibly filthy, you’d be surprised at the dirt that can come off with a bit of pressure. While you’re at it, make sure to power wash your driveway and any sidewalks. You’ll have your whole property looking brand-new in only a weekend.
9. Touch Up on Paint
Give your home the extra pop it needs to stand out this spring by applying a fresh coat of paint. If your exterior is vinyl siding, make sure you use a paint designed for siding. During the warmer months, if the sun shines directly on your house, the panels may warp, and you don’t want paint that can’t withstand the movement. To avoid it cracking, find paint specially designed for vinyl siding. When your whole home exterior is sparkling, it should be more inviting to guests.
10. Check Your Irrigation
Spring is an excellent time for people with gardens. You can start to grow bright, beautiful flowers — in the right circumstances. If you take pride in your garden, you should ensure that your irrigation system works well to effectively keep your plants moist and ensure water travels to the area of the plant that it needs to go to. Having a proper irrigation system in place allows you to water your beautiful greenery all at once rather than one at a time, especially when weather conditions are too hot or cold.
