People choose their travel destinations for many different reasons. Some are pulled by sandy beaches and lavish spas — others by grand vistas or the bustling nightlife. Then there are those of us who are drawn to certain places by their haunted history.
Spooky souls will delight in these six haunted cities, reveling in each’s bizarre bounty of haunted hotels, eerie eateries, and otherworldly attractions.
Baltimore

Home to one of horror’s greatest authors, Baltimore’s claim as one of America’s spookiest cities is backed by more than the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. With its founding dating back to 1729, this waterfront city stands as one steeped in history.
The Lord Baltimore Hotel is one of Charm City’s most established haunted locales. A site stained by the Great Depression, during which many despondent souls jumped from its high stories, it is haunted by a little girl who may have fallen accidentally from the roof — or whose parents took her with them in a desperate act, as told in a much darker version of the story.
Fells Point, found by Baltimore’s historic waterfront, also holds many chilling tales. Once a section of town overrun by brothels, bars, and boardinghouses, it holds many colorful ghosts — from the spirited smugglers and sailors of the Cat’s Eye Pub to the rowdy specters of the Admiral Fell Inn.
Gettysburg

No article mentioning America’s most haunted cities is complete without tipping its hat to Gettysburg. This Pennsylvania town still grapples with the phantoms left by the Battle of Gettysburg more than 160 years ago. An event that caused approximately 50,000 casualties, its echoes continue to haunt this hallowed town in countless ghost stories.
Today, soldiers are still seen marching the Gettysburg Battlefield, and ghostly ammunition rings out into the fog. Some particularly haunted locations include Devil’s Den and Little Round Top, where especially fierce fighting took place. Hospital Woods, in which a temporary field hospital of tents was placed just outside the battle lines, also continues to be surrounded by spectral energy.
In town, the haunts are no less dense. Gettysburg College, once used as a hospital during those dark days, continues to bear the spirits of wounded soldiers and disheveled doctors. The only civilian to die in battle remains within the Jennie Wade house, while spirit children continue to wander the Gettysburg Orphanage, left parentless and adrift.
Annapolis

Shaped by wars, violence, and the transatlantic slave trade, Annapolis continues to carry a shadowy aura. A historic port town, America’s Sailing Capital is no stranger to people drifting in and out of its reaches, be they living or dead.
Such is the case at the James Brice House, where the murdered Thomas Brice continues to linger. Yet the Georgian dwelling holds more secrets than unsolved homicides. Within these elegant mansion walls, rumors persist of screams emanating from the basement, hinting at dark secrets behind its stunning exterior.
Not far off lies the Maryland Inn on Church Circle. While its most famed ghosts are two tragic lovers known as Captain Charles Campbell and The Bride, these are far from the inn’s only spectral inhabitants. Guests and staff have sighted a woman in black and heard the ghostly singing of soldiers’ drunken songs.
Numerous haunted taverns reside in this maritime town as well, continuously roamed by phantoms and pesky poltergeists. Reynolds Tavern is known for its moving objects and ghostly patrons, as is Rams Head Tavern, where the spirits of its less civilized days like to tip over drinks.
Make sure to join an Annapolis ghost tour for a truly haunted experience in this mystical city!
New Orleans

Although you would never guess by its vivid colors and lively atmosphere, the history of New Orleans is dark indeed. A city that has been bruised by storms, disasters, and disease, it may have more ghosts than any other in America.
St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 alone is home to more than 700 crypts, some holding as many as 84 people inside, as was discovered in Voodoo Priestess Marie Laveau’s tomb. And this is just one of New Orleans’ many “Cities of the Dead” as they are known. NOLA has over 40 cemeteries to its name, all with their own eerie tales.
But expansive burial grounds aren’t all that makes the Crescent City haunted. It has a long tradition of frightening legends, from whispers of vampires and strange creatures to those of voodoo practitioners. And of course, it’s not without its tales of true crime, be you interested in the sinister activities of the axeman of New Orleans or the horrors of the LaLaurie Mansion.
Savannah

Witness to battle, fire, and epidemics over its lengthy history, Savannah is known by many as America’s most haunted city — a reputation that pairs perfectly with its streets lined with oaks and Spanish moss. Here, Yellow Fever claimed hundreds of lives in the 1800s, with one epidemic claiming as much as ten percent of the population.
As a result, a flurry of ghosts haunt its many bars, hotels, and homes. Consider the Kehoe House, now an elegant bed and breakfast, that remains frequented by the spirits of the Kehoe twins. Meanwhile, the Olde Pink House Restaurant and Tavern contains the phantom of its former owner, rumored to have taken his last breath in the basement.
Savannah is also home to the Hampton Lillibridge House, a dwelling that underwent a failed exorcism. Now, a private residence, odd tales continue to riddle this late 18th-century home, the truth of which remains behind locked doors.
Salem

As one of America’s oldest towns, Salem has every right to be haunted. When you take the 1692 witch trials into consideration, it escalates from haunted to cursed. A year-round mecca for the spooky and strange, the town nicknamed Witch City holds plenty of peculiar places. Some offer more playful activities, like tarot reading and broom-making classes. Others harbor more menacing stories.
Consider a visit to Howard Street Cemetery, where Giles Corey lingers near his unmarked grave. An accused witch, executed by being crushed to death, his enduring tale is as unsettling as the burial grounds he haunts. Said to have issued a curse with his dying breath, he hexed both the town and the sheriff, who soon met an untimely end, as have many other Salem sheriffs since.
The cemetery isn’t the only locale to bear the aftermath of the Witch Trials. Proctor’s Ledge, where many hangings took place, runs rampant with unusual activity. Other curious locales include Turner’s Seafood, built over the first victim of the Salem Witch Trials’ old tavern.
You’ll also find the eternal residence of “The Blue Lady” at Rockefeller Restaurant, who was murdered and hidden in the tunnels below when the structure was used as a church. Her unceremonious burial has seemingly caused her to stick around — either that or it’s the wicked good cocktails offered by this spirited drinking hole.
