Hello World! Welcome Friends! When creating graphics and images for the web, designers have an enormous choice of image formats. But not every file type is equally suitable for web design.
In this article, you will find out some of the most common raster formats for creating images.
JPG/JPEG
The JPG image format, also known as JPEG (.jpg), is one of the best-known raster formats for images and photos. It was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which also gave the format its name. JPEG is particularly suitable for storing color photos.
To compress the images, the cosine transform is used. This achieves a faster loading time. However, the method is lossy, which is why JPEG is not the right image format for logos.
GIF
Shaking memes with a retro look: That’s probably what most people think of when they hear about the GIF (.gif) file format. The Graphic Interchange Format is more of a video format composed of images.
Therefore, animated graphics can be created with GIFs, which have small file sizes and short loading times. The format is used today mainly for nostalgic reasons. Because of the 24-bit color support, it is not suitable for high-contrast images.
PNG
The PNG (.png; Portable Network Graphics) format is considered an extension of GIF. The advantage of the PNG image format is the two-stage compression. This process makes it possible to display images with:
- large full-color areas;
- sharp edges in great detail.
Transparent images can be saved with the PNG file formats after a graphic design or by a manual or automatic background remover. Therefore, they are suitable for creating logos, editing images, and more.
However, the disadvantage of the process is that PNG files are quite large and therefore take up a lot of storage space. However, the file quality differs little from a traditional JPEG format.
TIF / TIFF
If you are looking for a raster image format that offers lossless compression, then TIFF (.tiff) is your choice. The Tagged Image File format is, therefore, particularly suitable for creating print files for photos. The compression keeps the original files, which have a particularly high quality.
However, the image format is less suitable for the web. The huge files have very long loading times, which can significantly affect a website’s performance. The format is also not compatible with all browsers.
SVG
SVG (.svg; Scalable Vector Graphics) is a vector-based file format based on XML. The image format allows designers to create graphics that can be enlarged without loss of quality. SVG is, therefore, primarily used for creating logos and symbols. Since most browsers support the file format, it is particularly suitable for the web.
