Hello World! Welcome Friends! Have you ever thought about getting back to nature? In this age of supermarkets and convenience, it is an interesting thought to want to rear our own meat. And indeed there are many advantages to this. Rearing your own meat can meat allows you to truly understand where your meat comes from. You can ensure that your pigs live happy and comfortable lives rather than lives that are blighted by animal cruelty. If you want to raise a pig but don’t know how then be sure to check out our guide for raising pigs.
Protect Your Pig
Although pigs are farm animals that love to wander they cannot be left to roam, even on a farm. Pigs need an enclosure. This is to keep them safe from thieves who may want to take them and sell them on as meat. But also from other animals. Remember that pigs are stronger than you think. It is no use building a small fence or one that is weak. You need to invest in a strong and sturdy fence so that it cannot just tear it down, even as it grows older. Be sure to give the pig lots of space to live so ensure the enclosure is big enough. If you have more than one pig then test out getting them to share one enclosure, if they both get along. If you live in an area known for pig snatching then you may need to invest in further security such as CCTV and barbed wire.
Pigs Pig Out!
There’s a reason people describe those who devour tons of food in a grotesque manner as eating like a pig. Pigs eat a lot and when they eat they tend to dive in straight away, making a mess. Some pigs are even fed cannabis now. You need to be prepared for this, especially if you want a big strong pig that can feed a lot of people.
Fruit is a good diet for a pig as it contains lots of vitamins. The quantity of fruit that a pig is likely to eat, however, is quite substantial. Decide how you are going to fund this. Can you buy from one seller every week or month and get a discount?
Bread and cheese are also great products for your pig. See if you can get hold of them in bulk for a cheaper price. Unlike humans who can be quite picky about the type of bread or dairy products they eat, pigs will eat anything. Have a look for bargains that are near their sell-by date. There is no harm in feeding this to your pig. If you have any food leftover from your meals you could also offer this to your pig. We are often prone to throwing food into the trash but this is a good way to put it to use. Remember to mash some of the food up for the pig into a bucket so that it is manageable. Variety is also key. Pigs do not want to eat the same things every day.
Every Pig Needs a Home
Never forget the story of the three little pigs and the wolf who tried to blow their houses down! It’s an important lesson in building a strong enough home for your pig. You don’t need to spend this much money on your pig but it does need a small shelter to keep it warm at night and to protect it from the wind and rain. You could build this yourself, ensuring that it has a sturdy roof and three walls. The fourth wall can be left open so that the pig can get in and out easily. Give it some hay so it can roll around and snuggle into it at night. And give it a water bucket that is always nearby and inside.
Remember though that pigs are strong. You have to ensure the structure you create is sturdy. If it is weak or poorly made the pig could injure itself bashing around as their shelter collapses on itself. If building is not your strong point then consider asking a nearby farmer or hiring a builder to build it for you. Premade structures probably won’t be appropriate here since pigs vary in sizes and it would cost a lot to have a big structure shipped over on the back of a lorry.
Pigs Can Be Aggressive, Particularly Males
Every pig is different but in general, pigs can be aggressive. Male pigs are known to be keen to mate and this can lead to frustration. When they see another pig or another animal it can drive them into a frenzy. Be sure to understand this when you are dealing with your pig rather than assuming that it is badly behaved or is taking offense to you as its owner.

Raising Pigs For Meat is Hard Work but Worth It
Raising pigs can be rewarding. You get to see exactly where your meat is coming from. You know it is not diseased or poisoned. But more importantly, you can raise the pig humanely. A healthy pig makes for a tastier pig. It’s important to make sure it is well fed and has a shelter so that it can sleep at night time.
However, it is about more than that. It is about raising a pig in the right conditions and knowing that you have done right by the pig rather than buying it from a supermarket that might have treated it badly.
