Hello World! Welcome Friends! There was a time when humans lived without much regard for the environment because we simply didn’t know any better. However, modern science has allowed us to see just how much damage we’re doing and what the effects of that damage may be. Unfortunately, there are a lot of environmental issues facing the world today, from climate change to pollution and deforestation. The good news is, being aware of these problems is the first step in making global efforts to fix them. If you’re looking for a quick overview of some of the biggest environmental issues we face today, we’ve got you covered.
Climate Change
The one problem you’re most likely to hear about when it comes to the environment is climate change. Climate change is a big problem because it affects just about every other part of the environment and it’s something we’re constantly contributing to. Many of the traditional sources of energy we use release harmful CO2 into the air, which means hundreds of millions of motor vehicles in the US are constantly contributing to the problem. Even worse than the fact that climate change has such devastating effects is the fact that so many people vehemently deny that it exists, so the problem is simply ignored by many. The best thing you can do if you want to help with climate change is cut down on emissions as much as possible, whether that’s by driving less, driving an electric car or doing something else.
Water Scarcity and Pollution
One of the scariest problems we have in the world is the scarcity and pollution of our water. While people in some countries may be used to simply turning on a faucet and letting the water flow, that’s not a reality in some places. Water is very scarce right now because there are only so many sources of drinkable water. The Cadiz Water Project is one of many projects working to fight against water scarcity and make it more widely available. Aside from the fact that we don’t have a ton of good drinking water, there’s also the issue of pollution in the water. According to an estimate, there are about 14 billion pounds of trash dumped in the ocean each year. This has caused severe problems with marine wildlife and will continue to have larger effects the worse the pollution gets.
Overpopulation
Sure, there are a lot of problems that wouldn’t be quite as bad if we were more conscious of the environment, but the fact of the matter is the world is overpopulated. There has been a lot of speculation surrounding how many people our planet can support, and a lot of scientists think that number is around 10 billion. The problem is, our population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion just 50 years later. This means that the problems we have with things like water scarcity will only get worse. One thing a lot of scientists have been focusing on is how to more efficiently support a large population through alternative methods of farming and irrigation, transportation and more. Efforts like the Cadiz Water Project will become increasingly important when it comes to helping provide for our constantly growing population, so supporting them is crucial if you’re an environmental advocate.
Deforestation
During the early years of school, we learn that trees provide oxygen through photosynthesis. Because of this hugely important job trees have, they’re one of the most important parts of our ecosystem. Trees essentially help clean the air. Unfortunately, trees are constantly in danger between logging and deforestation for construction purposes. Once upon a time, large parts of the United States were made up of basically nothing but trees, but those trees had to be logged to make room for cities and highways. The Amazon rainforest, the largest rainforest on the planet, has already been cut down by about 20% of its original size for various reasons. Not only is this a big issue when it comes to having plenty of forests to keep the air clean, but it also displaces tons of species of animals since the Amazon rainforest is home to about 10% of the known species in the world.
If there’s one important impact you can have on the world, it’s doing what you can to keep the environment in decent shape. It’s not easy to change the way you live and be more conscious about the problems around us, but it’s more than worth it when you consider the alternative. Find ways to use less electricity, drive less and use more reusable products. As long as you take small steps toward helping, you’re doing your job. Repairing the environment is a team effort, though, so it’s not going to work if we don’t come together as people and make an effort to change.
