Hello World! Welcome Friends! Having my own bathroom was something I dreamed about as a teenager. The thought of not being beholden to anyone else’s timetable made me almost giddy. I imagined myself spending luxuriously long baths surrounded by candles, (oh so many candles), as I admired all my fancy products neatly lined up on a vanity complete with Hollywood style dressing room mirror with lights.
If you have contemplated adding an ensuite to an existing room, then you know that visions of a full-length tub are probably a bit more fantasy than fact. However, even in the smallest of spaces, you can whip up a magical and relaxing retreat. Read on for some of my top tips to make an ensuite feel enormous.
1. Clever Storage
Clear and uncluttered surfaces are the best way to make a room feel more spacious. By carefully planning out storage you can maximize what you are working with. The benefit of an ensuite is that you have a main bathroom that can take the job of storing the multipacks of toilet paper and any other bulk buys. Be considerate with what you actually choose to store in your ensuite and the space will go a lot further. Under-sink storage can be an ideal way to hide any essentials. Alternatively, if your toilet and sink are going to be on the same wall, build the sink into a counter that can extend over and above the toilet cistern to get some extra space that is ideal for placing baskets or boxes on that will keep things neat and tidy.
2. Choose a Sink Wisely
Speaking of sinks, if space is very tight, consider a corner sink. Yes, they are smaller than the average sink but they also have the benefit of being rounded so you can avoid being jabbed in the thigh or hip by a sharp corner.
There are options where the sink is built into the cistern of the toilet. It’s the ultimate in space-saving, but personally, I’m not a fan. I don’t really want to be brushing my teeth over the toilet.
3. Add Some Luxury
When creating a space, I feel it’s important to plan on things that will make the space enjoyable. To me, an enjoyable bathroom goes hand in hand with warm and fluffy towels. Which leads me to what I consider a bathroom essential; a heated towel rail. Choose a ladder style version that has enough space to hang towels and you will never again be faced with drying yourself with a damp rag. Working out plumbing is always a bit of a headache which is why I recommend electric towel rails, like the ones I found here at Trade Radiators. They are mounted to the wall like a standard radiator but instead of being connected to your home’s heating system, they are a self-contained system that uses electricity to get warm, allowing you to have hot, on-demand towels at the flick of a switch.
4. Shower in Comfort
Size matters when it comes to your shower options. Right up there with drying yourself on a damp towel is pressing against a cold and clingy shower curtain or not being able to turn around comfortably in a boxy enclosed shower stall. Curved shower rails are an excellent way to give yourself a little more wiggle room. If you are planning on a shower enclosure then aim for a design that doesn’t require a door to keep things feeling airy.
No matter the size of the space you are working with you can still create the bathroom of your dreams by carefully considering some basic design options. Oh yes, and there is always- always- space for a Hollywood dressing room mirror with lights!
