Hello World! Welcome Friends! Even though you’ve heard time and time again not to judge the proverbial book by its cover, there is something to be said for things you find aesthetically pleasing. Granted, there is more behind outward appearances than providing simple eye candy; seeing something as being well presented implies it is also well maintained. Think of a house for example; staying on top of cleaning and maintaining your biggest investment not only has good curb appeal, but it also shows your sense of pride for your most sacred personal space.
Looking good on the outside to feel good on the inside can also be applied to physical appearances, too. Arm yourself with the beauty essentials that will help you to look your best. When you’re talking about beauty products, you don’t have to take out a second mortgage to take care of yourself. There are plenty of affordable options when it comes to skincare so you don’t have to purchase top of the line products if you don’t have unlimited resources.
Stick To The Basics
When talking about essential skincare products, you don’t need a cupboard full of products. It’s most important to have a skincare routine that consists of a daily cleaner, an exfoliant such as glycolic acid, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
The first step in any skincare regimen is cleansing your skin. Your skin is the canvas that everyone sees first. It’s important to clean your face to keep dirt and oil that can clog pores and cause blemishes at bay. Once or twice a week, be sure to exfoliate to rid your skin of excess dead skin cells to keep your skin vibrant and radiant. A buildup of dead skin cells will quickly dull the appearance of the skin.
In order to keep your skin looking supple and even younger and healthier, use a moisturizer to prevent it from drying out. Moisturizer should be used twice a day, after cleansing, to keep skin looking its best. Last but not least, protect your skin from the harmful elements of the sun by using sunscreen when you know you are going to be outside. Overexposed skin can look prematurely old and dry, and eventually take on a leathery texture.
Ingredients to Avoid
Now that you know what you should be doing to take care of your skin, it is equally important to know what you shouldn’t be doing. More specifically, which ingredients in your skincare products you want to avoid. Unlike the food we eat, which is heavily moderated by the FDA, your skincare products do not have such stringent guidelines. It is up to you to read the labels on these products and to look out for the ones that may be potentially harmful.
Synthetic color additives are suspected to be directly linked to carcinogens. When you think that you are putting these products on your skin to be absorbed into your body, you don’t want to introduce artificial color. You can identify these additives because they are denoted by FD&C or D&C followed by a color and a number. You do not want to use products with these ingredients because they originate from petroleum or coal tar sources.
Just as you want to try to eat as clean as you can, you also want to avoid skincare products that contain preservatives such as parabens. While it seems preserving beauty products by preventing the growth of bacteria would be ideal, parabens are not. They contain properties that mimic estrogen and, when absorbed by the body, have been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
While on your journey to preserve aesthetics by keeping up your appearance, be sure you don’t do it at the cost of your health.
