8 Plants to Consider if you Are a Newbie at Plant Parenting
Spider Plant: It is also known as spider ivy or ribbon plant and is a very common indoor plant that is safe for you and your canine or feline friends, in case you have pets. These work well in low-light conditions and don’t come with an extensive maintenance manual. Perfect for new plant parents! They look great in hanging pots, so you don’t have to worry about pets poking them.
Boston Fern: Same as the Spider plant, these are good for hanging in beautiful macrame pots. Like all ferns, they love moisture and warmth. Make sure you give a little water every day to keep the soil moist. A well-nurtured Boston fern looks like a green waterfall making them great wall décor. As per plant enthusiasts, this fern tops the list of favorites for homeowners across Australia.
True Palms: These are plants from theArecaceae family. Some of these include – Areca, Ponytail, Golden palms, etc. All of them are pretty low-maintenance plants and thrive indoors. Steer clear of the words Sago or Cycad (not true palms) if you have pets in the house. Like all members of the Palm family, they love dry, well-lit setups. Make sure you don’t overwater them and enjoy seeing your cat fighting with the leaves.
Mistletoe Cactus: Looking for a unique hanging succulent? Look no further! Mistletoe cactus is a trailing cactus that is well suited for hanging. The pin-like leaves facing downwards can add a bohemian feel to any corner. And if you are concerned that your beloved cat is going to poke at it, well, even if they do sneak up on the plant, it’s only going to give them a little ouchie and nothing more. For these reasons and more, it is one of the top indoor plants in Australia for consecutive years.
Prayer Plant: These plants love low light and humid conditions and are great additions to bathrooms or any dark corner of your house. With beautifully variegated leaves, they add an artistic touch to your plant collection. Isn’t this plant the answer to all your prayers?
African Violets: Looking to add some flowery goodness to your green palette? These colorful flowers grow easily and look like bouquets. They thrive in low-light conditions. Just keep them away from a drafty vent or window and enjoy the bloom.
Haworthia succulents: These are easy to care for plants with infrequent watering needs and look fabulous as a tabletop or stand plants. If the prickly leaves don’t keep your curious pet away, they won’t fall sick either. A total win-win situation, isn’t it?
Chinese Money Plant: Also known as Pancake plant or UFO plant (don’t get us started on why), these plants have cute oval leaves and are pretty low maintenance. They are self-propagators and thrive well in filtered light. Make your puppy pose next to it and ask your Instafam which one’s cuter!

3 Great Décor Ideas Using Indoor Plants
- Jazz up a corner:
Hanging or trailing plants like the Mistletoe cactus is perfect for bringing focus to an otherwise dull corner of your room. It is best if you place the plant near a window. Add a top, place a Buddha idol or a family heirloom, and voila! You have transformed a dull corner into a happy corner.
- Transform your home entrance:
While people pay a lot of attention to the living room, they often ignore the house entrance. Arrange a few tall plants like palms or bamboo in a cluster, thrown in a rug, add some focal lighting, and there you have a house entrance that will bring a smile to every face.
- Build a ‘me’ corner:
Who doesn’t love those cozy reading nooks that look like they are straight out of a Nicholas Sparks novel? If you want one for your house, all you have to do is choose a quiet window seat or even an awkwardly built alley, throw in a comfortable rug, and a big potted plant (preferably with large leaves). All that’s left is to grab a book, a cup of coffee and snuggle your way to bliss.
Closing Thoughts
When it comes to using live plants as home décor, there is really no stopping you. Be it a tall palm at the entrance of your house or dainty African blossoms to liven up the kitchen, the range of indoor plants is practically endless. Toodles,

I will file this away for that time when we are eventually down to one house. Going back and forth between the Midwest US and southern Florida has made me a faux plant fan. Being away from one or the other of our homes for weeks at a time only allows me to use artificial plants but I do love the look and the benefits of live plants and look forward to the day that I can incorporate them into our home. Thanks for the easy plant tutorial because I have always felt that the kindest thing I can do to a living plant is to leave it at the nursery. I always enjoy your posts.
Thanks again,
Pamela
