Hello World! Welcome Friends! Taking care of regular pets like cats and dogs can be difficult at times. Taking care of a bird is not any harder, but it’s completely different than having a cat or dog. Birds are very social beings, and they need a lot of care and frequent company. One thing to know about birds is that there goes a lot into making your bird happy, but if you have in mind some things, it shouldn’t be too hard for you. Here are some important tips on how to properly take care of this pet.
1. Feeding
The first thing to note is that you shouldn’t give the same food all the time to your bird. You should give it various types of food during the day. A healthy diet consists of 75% pellets and 25% human table foods. You could buy, or you can learn how to make a bird feeder, which would help you immensely. The diet of birds varies according to the species, so try seeking advice from an avian veterinarian to see what type of food your bird needs. When you buy packed bird food, it usually is labeled for what bird it is. Bird pellets ensure good nutrition for your bird. These contain healthy seeds, vegetables, fruits, and grains. These are preferred to a seed mix that allows birds to pick what they want and possibly leave the healthy seeds behind.
2. Housing
Try purchasing a large cage, where the bird is going to live. Birds love space, so when you decide that you want to have a bird as a pet, first have in mind that you should buy the biggest cage you can get. A general rule is that the cage should be twice the size of the bird’s wingspan. For some birds, it is very important to fly within the cage so that they remain healthy. If you do not have the money to buy the large cage or the time to clean a big one, then you should try to let the bird out as much as you can. You shouldn’t buy cages that have small bars, because the bird’s feathers could get stuck in them. Also, if the bars are too big, the head could get caught. To ensure your bird’s comfort and safety, consider providing the best bedding for bird cages, such as natural and non-toxic materials like paper or aspen shavings.
3. Rectangular Cage
When deciding what cage to buy, you should opt for a rectangular one, since circle cages are bad for them. Circle cages don’t have any corners and thus the bird doesn’t have a place to fly to, where it would feel more secure. Also, the bird can develop behavioral problems from constant turning. A smaller cage should only have one bird in it, birds like to socialize, but they also need time away from other birds. Put magazines on the floor of the cage, you will make the cleaning a lot easier.
4. Toys and Perches
You should start with at least 4 toys. Make sure that they are safe for the birds, that toes and beaks cannot get caught in any parts of them. Bells are great toys for birds, make sure that it doesn’t have any gaps in it where it can stick its feet. Wires should not be used when playing with your pet, they can pierce the bird. After some time you should invest in different new toys, which can increase the joy of the bird, and it can reduce feather plucking that is usually done due to boredom.
5. Socializing
The first thing that you need to take care of, is making the place where you want to let the bird out safe. You need to close the windows and also the blinds, close the toilet seat and the fireplace if you have one. If you have radiators, be sure to turn them off. Most birds need this time out of the cage to stay healthy. Also, the birds could start biting, screaming, feather plucking if they are not given this time. You should let the bird explore the room, let it enjoy its freedom after being engaged for some time.
6. Health and Hygiene
You need a veterinarian to take a look at your pet, especially if you see strange behavior. Before you bring a new bird into your home, get it checked to see whether it has some disease. You should bring your pet at least once a year to the veterinarian. Not all vets know how to take care of each species of bird, so take a look into their credentials. You should provide fresh water each day for the bird, birds can drink it, but also they like to wash with it. If the water bowl is large enough, it will take a bath in it. Clean the cage daily, the bird needs it, and also it will be easier for you.
Taking care of birds is not too difficult, and for some people, they are much more interesting than other pets. You don’t need a lot of time to take care of them, but you need to stay dedicated and caring. If you consider some of the advice we have listed, you will hopefully do a great thing for your pet.
