Hello World! Welcome Friends! When you own a home, you need to be aware of all the things that could go wrong and cause problems, especially the ones that could cause damage. However, while some are always going to be obvious, others might be less easy to spot, and they’re often quite surprising. With that in mind, here are some of those surprising things that could be damaging your home – once you know what they are, you can do something to stop the problem and keep your home (and everyone in it) nice and safe.
Pests
No one likes the idea of pests in their home, but for the most part, they’re not dangerous, are they? They can’t do any damage, can they? Sadly, that’s not true, and in fact, some pests can do a lot of damage, even to the point of entirely destroying the building.
Of course, that’s a rare event, but it has been known for mice and rats to chew through wires and cause fires, for example, or for ants and other creatures to damage the foundation of a property. That’s why you need to remove them as soon as possible and ensure that any damage is kept to a minimum. The best option is to learn all you can about how to get rid of carpenter ants or whatever other problem you might be dealing with so you have all the facts, and you can get all the tools. Doing half the job might leave the door open for the pests to return, and your issues will start all over again.
Moisture
A wet house is a damaged house, and if you spot any signs of water damage, you need to take steps to put things right quickly. Unfortunately, in some cases, by the time you see the water, the damage is widespread and can be costly to fix (although it will still need to be done).
Moisture will usually come from rain and snow landing on the roof and seeping through, potentially because the roof isn’t in good condition. Check your roof first and fix it if there are holes or slipped tiles, and that will stop the problem from getting worse. Next, you need to clear up the water – a dehumidifier can work well as that will remove moisture from the air. Finally, you’ll need to fix the damage. You can’t just paint over damp walls because the stains and mold will eventually show through, so you need to clean everything up and make sure it’s all dry – it could be that an expert will need to help, especially if it turns out the walls have to be replaced.
Overgrown Trees
When there’s a lot to do in the house, the backyard might be the last thing on your mind, and a few overgrown trees really aren’t going to make it to the top of your to-do list. The bad news is that’s where you’re making a mistake because those overgrown trees could be causing damage to your home.
If the trees are tall enough, they can cause damage to your roof (even if they don’t fall on the roof, they might still rub on it and cause a hole to appear, for example), not to mention the leaves that could clog up your gutters. The roots could also be a problem, especially if they’re damaging your foundation. You’ll need to keep the trees trimmed if you want to ensure they’re not harming your property.
