Hello World! Welcome Friends! Memorial Day is behind us, school is out for us and Summer is here. As many of my readers know, we had a pool at the last house and there have been many discussions about putting a pool in our new backyard. Of course, I have already designed a pool, but I needed to do quite a bit of research on landscaping and lighting to help showcase the pool.
The design of the new pool is completely different than our previous pool mainly due to the fact that the shape of the backyards are completely different. In regards to the lighting and landscaping, I really want a traditional feel to compliment the pool. The environment I want to create is one that is warm and inviting. Lighting is the very key that will help create the perfect atmosphere for entertaining by the pool. The indoor and outdoor lighting company, Festive Lights produced a great list of garden lighting trends and tips for summer 2017 that I found very helpful in my planning.
Bring the inside out
It’s always been about bringing the outside in, but how about changing things up this summer and making your garden an extension of your indoor living space? Using the right furniture, accessories and lighting can create an alluring ambience. I learned that fairy lights and festoon lighting are key features in making your garden space more enticing this season. They perfectly illuminate any space, not giving off a stark and bright light, but a soft warm glow.
Another tip was to use lanterns. Lanterns, whether Moroccan style, lit by wax or LED candles, or even colorful hanging lanterns on string lights, have proved very popular throughout the winter, a trend which will continue into the summer; able to be taken out onto patios and lawned areas for a decorative feature that will not only brighten the space but will be a fantastic talking point. Imagine having a cozy seating area by the pool surrounded by beautiful roses and lanterns. Perfectly dreamy!
Enhance features
Since the pool will be the garden’s focal point, it’s important to have strategic lighting to enhance the pool and other areas of the garden that I want to draw attention to. With well-placed lighting, you can accentuate the parts of your garden that give it character while drawing it all together seamlessly.
Highlight borders
Since the pool will make a pretty big statement, I don’t want to neglect the borders. In fact, the plan is to highlight them with landscaping and lighting. This will also make a great statement for the surrounding patios, decking and to illuminate pathways to help create the perfect atmosphere.
Solar lighting
Solar lights are a fantastic option for lighting that can act as both functional and decorative especially highlighting borders and pathways. Not only are they far more energy efficient, saving you money in the long run, but they’re also easy to install and can be left in place for a long time.
Layer your lighting
Another facet is the importance of layers in the garden. I’m working on bringing together all the above ideas in a thoughtful and well-planned way so that my pool, spa, and outdoor living areas are beautiful, inviting and above all relaxing. A place where one can be at peace and truly let the cares of the day and the world melt away. So, there won’t be glaring lights, but soft lighting at varying heights to accentuate the garden.
I will keep you posted on the pool and back garden design and when this project will take place. Don’t forget, Make it Pretty Monday is live. Be sure to pop on over and add your crafts, diy, recipes, home decor. Click HERE to head to the party.

I find it awesome that you said that adding lanterns of any kind can help make a great conversation piece while making the atmosphere cozy at the same time. Learning about this convinced me to buy some online later to help my sister redecorate. That way, she can get ready for her spring pool party and help everyone celebrate the warmer weather ahead.
