Hello World! Welcome Friends! Over a period of time living in a house or apartment, we all accumulate a certain amount of stuff – just items that we have bought, received or otherwise come into possession of. And with the recent fashion for decluttering, it’s easy to look at the things we have accumulated and decide that some need to be placed out of sight, and more importantly moved out of the way so that you can freely move around your home.
Of course, this leads to the question of whether you store the items in your home or look into the possibility of a more dedicated self storage facility. In the former case, you can take items that are currently out on show and move them into a store cupboard, your attic or elsewhere, including storage closets you can buy for the purpose. The latter has its supporters too, and below we’ll look into the pros and cons of either option.
Convenience
The idea of storing your items is that you’ll still have access to them if you want them. If you don’t want them at all, then you can give them away or dispose of them. If, on the other hand, you do want to keep them, there is the question of why you’re keeping them. If you need to access them at short notice, then they should be stored on your property. If, on the other hand, we’re talking about items such as a drum kit or decoration supplies, they can be stored off site at a dedicated unit, and retrieved when you know you’re going to need them.
Safety
There are some things we store away because leaving them where they can be reached has repercussions for your own safety or that of family and pets. If your items for storage include chemicals or other potential contaminants, they should certainly be stored away from the home. This is particularly important because storage units can be climate-controlled to prevent items reaching a dangerous temperature in summer or winter.
Size
There are a few different reasons to consider size when choosing items to go into storage. The first is that you are almost certain to have more room in a storage unit, where you can fit things that may only occasionally be used but which take up a lot of space (like, for example, a carpet shampooer). Additionally, small and fragile items that may well have sentimental value should probably be stored in a dedicated space in the home. Although a storage unit is secure and safe, that doesn’t remove the possibility that small items could fall while in storage and become difficult or even impossible to retrieve. Place them in a dedicated secure lockbox inside the home.
A storage unit at the right price is the ideal place to store items that for one reason or another may be problematic to store within the home. Just consider the purposes for which you are storing the items and the benefits of storing things off-site – and be prepared to ask questions of the company that runs the storage unit.
