Hello World! Welcome Friends! A garage is far more than just where you park your car. Unfortunately, because most residential garage spaces are not finished when the home is acquired, it ends up staying that way. It takes a bit of skill and general construction know-how to carry the baton further and finish a garage to an actual, functional working part of the house. It’s far easier just to park the car in there and store things wherever space is possible. It’s only when people take the opportunity to remove everything and really proactively redo the garage that they realize the possibilities. The first step in that path is redoing the unfinished flooring.
What to Expect and How to Start
In most cases, unfinished garage flooring involves bare concrete slabs with expansion cracks between them for temperature changes. Even the area where the concrete ends and the walls begin is unfinished and bare. In some cases, the room doesn’t even have drywall on the ceiling or walls, showing the bare rafters and external insulation sheeting. So, if everything temporary can be removed, this provides a great opportunity to finish the floors with an epoxy approach.
Why epoxy? First off, it’s highly durable and a far better layer overall than just plain cement paint. Using a mix of urethanes and similar chemicals, an epoxy flooring application applies a thick layer of flooring finish on the top of the cement, giving it a solid protection that, when completely, can easily be parked on with a car, but also provides a better surface than bare cement if one wants to use the garage for something else.
Secondly, the epoxy flooring layer provides an effective seal, blocking moisture, engine chemicals, dirt, and scuffing from continuing to damage the cement layer underneath. Instead, the contaminants can be easily cleaned and removed. That prolongs the life of the subfloor, and prevents additional cracking and eventual chipping from wear and tear.
Is it Better to Rely on an Application Team or DIY?
With a combination of product and professional skill, the installation of epoxy garage floors in Charlotte is not hard at all. In fact, with a clean garage, the work can usually be done in a day with another day or so of proper curing and finishing. A garage can become usable again in a very short window, and definitely within a week.
While there are other options for epoxy flooring in Charlotte, such as DIY kits from a local big box hardware store, remember that mistakes happen as people learn to do something for the first time. If you’ve never actually applied flooring, that can be a difficult, expensive learning curve with lots of delays. Instead, it’s better to bring in a team who does the work regularly and focus instead on how to use the new garage far more efficiently than before
Options Once the Flooring is Complete
Since a finished floor in a garage now makes the space far more usable, many homeowners have started to rethink their garage space for an active workshop, an additional entertainment room, a personal gym space, and more. It becomes easy and natural to also finish the walls, add in a proper cabinet and counter set, and more. It’s actually pretty amazing what happens when an epoxy floor gets applied because the choice tends to kickstart a wave of other improvements as well. Ultimately, people realize how much more they can get out of the Charlotte garage space than just a car parking spot.
