Hello World! Welcome Friends! Many people take part in athletics without knowing the risk of injuries sustained from sports. Take a look at the tips in this article and learn about the different types of everyday sports injuries and the treatments used to prevent them.
Sprains
Sprains are common in sports and can occur when the ankle, foot, or lower leg experiences a sudden twisting force. When this happens, the ligaments that support the joint become stretched. This can lead to pain and swelling.
There are a few things you can do to help ease your sprain. You’ll need to immobilize the injured limb as much as possible. It is beneficial to also apply a bandage over the injury and if possible use an Unna boot to avoid any movement. Make sure that it is also kept elevated as much as possible.
Rest the injured part of your body as much as possible and avoid walking on it until the pain goes away. Ice the injured area regularly and see your doctor if there is significant swelling or pain.
Knee Injuries
Knee injuries can be really frustrating, as they often lead to a lot of pain and generally take a long time to heal. However, with the right treatment, it’s possible to get your knee back to full strength very quickly.
The two most common knee injuries are the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The medial collateral ligament is located on the inside of the thigh just below the knee joint. It helps support the shinbone by connecting it to the leg bone above it. If your MCL is injured, it can stretch or tear easily. This can cause significant pain and swelling around the knee joint and may require surgery to repair it.
Treatment typically involves resting the knee and stretching exercises to strengthen the MCL. After repairs are made, physical therapy and rehabilitation can get you back on your feet.
The anterior cruciate ligament is located in front of your knee joint. It helps connect the thighbone to the leg bone behind it. Like the MCL, a torn ACL can cause significant pain and swelling, as well as instability in your knee when running or lunging. Treatments include rest and gentle stretching exercises that utilize all four quadriceps muscles to restore stability to your knee joint. This is usually done by a physical therapist.
Swollen Muscles
Swollen muscles are another common sports injury. When muscles become inflamed, they can cause pain and discomfort, as well as loss of function.
There are a few things you can do to help reduce the likelihood of experiencing swollen muscles:
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help keep your body free from toxins and help keep your muscles hydrated.
Stretch after you work out: Stretching following exercise will help to reduce the risk of muscle tension and injury. This is especially important if you stretch regularly for 150 minutes or less per week.
Take supplements: Taking quality supplements can also play an important role in reducing the risk of developing swelling and inflammation. Some common supplements that have been shown to be helpful in reducing the risk of sports-related injuries include omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and magnesium.
Fractures
Fractures happen when the bone is broken. Even small fractures can turn into more serious problems if not treated quickly and properly.
There are a few types of fractures: compression, extension, and rotation.
Compression fractures are the most common and usually occur when the bone is pushed against something else, like against a bone in the skull in an accident or during a fall. This type of fracture can be fatal if not treated quickly because the pressure can cause severe hemorrhaging or brain swelling.
Extension fractures are when the bone pulls away from the adjacent bone or muscle. These fractures can often be caused by rushing to help someone involved in an accident or being thrown against something hard. They can also be caused by medical conditions like osteoporosis or brittle bones.
Rotation fractures occur when two bones wind up on their side. This type of fracture is often seen in people who twist their ankles while running or jump off of something high.
Treatments for fractures include rest, immobilization or splinting, and surgery to treat the underlying injury or condition. Although fractures can occur if a broken bone doesn’t heal properly, they do not need to be very severe in order to be serious medical emergencies.
If you or someone you know is suffering from a sport-related injury, it is important to seek the appropriate medical help as soon as possible. Sports injuries can be incredibly debilitating and often require surgical intervention in order to restore movement and function.
However, there are also many non-surgical treatments that can be very effective in aiding the healing process. Knowing the most common injuries and how to treat them, you can be more careful when playing your favorite sport.
