Hello World! Welcome Friends! Getting a full night’s rest has a major impact on our physical and mental health. When we don’t sleep well we are more likely to: eat more unhealthy foods, slow down on exercise, be more stressed out than necessary, and resort to unhealthy habits to try and make us sleep. If you are struggling with getting the right amount of sleep, we do have some tips that you can try that don’t involve counting sheep!
How Many Hours Do You Really Need?
For many years, we have heard that we must sleep for eight hours a night to get the appropriate amount of sleep. Recent studies indicate that the number actually fluctuates as we age! Some have sleeping disorders that worsen over time like sleep apnea. This is a type of condition that needs remedy like positioning, weight control or a continuous positive airway machine if recommended by doctors. On average, most adult Americans sleep for 7 hours a night. It’s a fair number to rely on but you can ask yourself some questions. Do you feel well rested with 7 hours? Does it take 9 hours for you to get through the day without yawning and wanting a nap? Pay attention to your body and follow its cues so that you get the right sleep for you.
Is Your Bed Up To Snuff?
Maybe you aren’t getting the sleep you need because you spend most of the night tossing and turning? Trying to find the sweet spot and losing miserably. It could very well be that your bed needs to be changed! You can check out beds online, such as Bedding Mart, and have one delivered to your door for quick and easy setup.
Watch Your Diet
Another major factor in the ability to sleep is your diet. Eating a few hours before you lay down is a very bad idea and contributes to a lot of indigestion during the night. It may be mild enough that you don’t realize it but it keeps you up. Depending on the types of food you eat will also play a factor. Ease up on the hot and spicy and go with warm and light. Ease up on those carbs as well! Carbs only fill us up for a little bit and we could find ourselves waking up in the middle of the night hungry.
Minimize The Sound And Light
Unless you live in a rural area with little light pollution and next to no noise, you could be kept awake by the all-night happenings in your city or town. Street lights invade our bedrooms and sirens can jolt us awake. The first thing to do is to use blackout curtains in your bedroom to minimize how much light is going on in your bedroom. Secondly, don’t fall asleep with lights on. Thirdly, get rid of the television from your bedroom. It generates way too much stimulating noise and light for any person to truly sleep deeply like they need to. If you do all of this and still find it to be noisy, consider soundproofing your bedroom. There are lots of stylish options these days and you can really add some pizzazz to the room while creating the quiet environment you need.
Consult Your Doctor
Most people attribute sleepless nights with external factors or stressors from their environment, and they’re right a lot of times. However, if sleep loss has become habitual, you may have a more serious problem than an uncomfortable mattress. Sleep disorders are more common than you think. About 70 million Americans suffer from one, according to Cleveland Clinic.
Sleep apnea is one of the most common sleep disorders, and it affects millions of people and keeps them from getting quality sleep at night. Treatment for sleep apnea includes using sleep aid devices such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines.
The machine provides a constant flow of pressurized air, which is sent down the user’s airway through a tube and a CPAP nasal or full-face mask. The pressurized air keeps the patient’s throat from collapsing, helps them breathe regularly during sleep, and slumber more peacefully.
Do you suspect that you have a sleep issue? Consult your health-care provider immediately and do not self-medicate or try any treatment without your doctor’s recommendation.
Get Outside
One of the biggest contributing factors to feeling sleepy all day is due to lack of sunshine. Think about it for just a moment. Have you ever noticed that on a dark and rainy day that sleep seems so inviting? If you are working indoors without any access to sunlight through a window, take yourself outside every so often and soak up some sun. It helps us stay alert and reinforce that when the sun goes down, it’s time to sleep.
Whether you decide to create a bedroom sanctuary or you need to change up some routine habits, when you find the thing that works you are going to feel so wonderful. You will want to get up in the mornings and feel refreshed, you will eat healthier and feel better, you won’t rely on drugs or alcohol to sleep, and you will handle stress so much better.
