Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you’ve moved into a new home, decorating it is definitely more fun than setting up security measures. However, home security should be a top priority. Get back to the fun part of moving, by implementing these simple security measures first to secure your new home.
Secure the Doors
Don’t help a burglar to just stroll into your home through the front door. Inspect all your exterior doors to make sure that the door frames are strong, the hinges are protected, and if the door has a mail slot, that someone couldn’t reach through it to unlock the door.
If you are moving into a home that someone else used to live in, call a locksmith to change the door locks. This way, you won’t have strangers out there who might still have a key to your home, and you can make sure that your locks are the best on the market.
There are some other quick and simple reinforcements that can help you to make your entryways and exits more secure:
- Install a deadbolt
- Add a strike plate
- Upgrade to smart locks
- Improve security with a video doorbell
Reinforce Sliding Glass Doors
Intruders love sliding doors as an entry point, so make sure that yours are protected. You could do this in an old-school way, by using a dowel or window bar in the track to keep the door from being forced open. If you want a high-tech solution, add a door sensor or glass break sensor. These will alert you if the glass door is being tampered with, and should scare off thieves.
Lock the Windows
Windows are another common entry point for thieves. Your windows might have been left shut but unlocked by the previous owners. Manufacturer latches on windows aren’t always effective, and can even be outright flimsy.
If you don’t like the look of the latches on your windows, improve your security by adding window locks or key-operated levers.
If you want even more security, there are some more things you can try to make your windows burglar-proof:
- Reinforce the glass with window security film
- Install window or glass break sensors
- Add window bars
- Plant pickle bushes under first-floor windows, but keep them trimmed.
Light Up the Outdoors
Vandals, burglars, and other criminals really don’t like to be in the spotlight. Keep people like this at bay with plenty of outdoor lighting. Place lights around the front and back yards, along your pathways, and near the garage and any other outdoor structures. This lighting will make intruders feel skittish, and you can also cut down on your own risk of tripping and falling on the front steps when you come home after dark.
Make your outdoor security lights even more effective with these easy tips:
- Use motion-activated lights on entryways
- Save energy with solar-powered lights
- Use a smart outlet to put outdoor lights on a timer to run when you aren’t home
- Set up schedules with smart lights bulbs as well
